Brief Lincoln Park/Lakeview report

Just a couple of items.

Had dinner at El Nuevo Mexicano on Clark, which had been mentioned favorably a couple of times here. After tasting the appetizer we were excited for the rest. Chicken empanadas with tomatillo salsa and cream. Chicken was very nicely spiced, the tomatillo salsa was better, in my opinion, than Bayless' at Frontera, which I really love. Really good.

Unfortunately, the entrees weren't as good. Sopes with chicken and arbol chile was bland, and the chile sauce had no heat. Enchiladas in the house mole likewise. The mole didn't have much flavor and was almost sweet. What was puzzling was the chicken in both the sopes and the enchiladas was completely different (bland) from the appetizer. Given the focus of the menu (more fish entree driven and leaning toward fusion?), maybe we just picked wrong, but....

Breakfast at The Grove on Diversey. Pretty good. Nothing wildly outstanding Big omelets at a good price.

Find of the trip, the Red Hen bakery across the street from The Grove. A wonderful roasted garlic bread (in a ring shape, garlic in the middle). Truly crusty and flavorable. Went great with dinner at home that night.
