The Old Mill is the way to go. They take care of every little of your day. Also it is a one stop shop. You can have your ceramony, pictures, and reception all in the same place. it make the day a lot less stressful

We had our wedding at Estates of Sunnybrook for only 10% more than it would have been at the Old Mill, and you can do it all there too; the only catch is that at Sunnybrook your max number of guests is 130 if you are doing the ceremony there.

We found the Old Mill felt like a wedding mill with all the rooms, and that the decor was very Tudor and gloomy.

Can't comment about the food though, but the food at Sunnybrook was excellent.

I second Estates of Sunnybrook. A close fried had her wedding there, with a ceremony outside in the garden and afternoon meal outside on the patio (the weather was perfect - though the event could have been taken inside if there was rain). The setting was gorgeous, elegant and the food (a lovely buffet with antipasto, grilled foods & vegetables) was excellent. My friend said they were very good to deal with.

I wouldn't recommend the Old Mill -- I held a corporate event there and, in my opinion, the food was terrible. It's just such a "big" place -- there's so many events going on there at one time, and I feel it's a bit of a "factory". I would never go there again. I hold a big corporate event every year, and the prices at some of the better hotels in the city are only a small percentage more than the Old Mill, so I would look at some of them before deciding. Favorites have been: the King Eddy, Park Hyatt, Intercontinental (in Yorkville) Sutton Place (exceptional!) and The Four Seasons. Places I haven't gone to yet, but which look good are The Metropolitan and The Grand.
If you're on more of a budget, I've been to two weddings years ago at the Toronto Police Association (and no, you don't have to be affiliated with the police) in the Don Mills/Sheppard area, and they were both lovely and on good budgets.
I also went to a wedding at Le Parc at Leslie/Hwy 7 -- they got a fabulous one-price for everything (open bar, signature cocktail, DJ, three-course meal and late-night sweet table), and the food was actually quite good. It was a nice evening.

My brother's wedding was at the Old Mill. Best wedding I have ever been too. We were a small group, so we had a private dining area overlooking the main room, and paid a surcharge so the guests could use the dance floor with the Jazz style band they had already playing on the Friday evening.

Depends on what you want. Are you looking for a cheap place, where you can bring your caterer, or are you looking for somewhere that handles everything? I had my wedding at the York Event Theater on Eglington and brought my own caterer. We saved tons of money by doing it that way. And to this day, 5 years later people still tell me it was the most amazing wedding and food they have ever seen. I'll give all the details on caterer etc. if thats the way you want to go. Just let me know. : )

PS I paid $40 a plate (6 course meal plus pre-dinner apps with and oyster bar, ice sculpters, midnight buffet with lobsters and seafood, and desserts) You would pay $150 per person easily anywhere else for that. I got quotes of $200 p/plate.

In any case, should "Farmer759" want to find his own venue and caterer I can recommend an excellent. His food doesnt taste like the typical bland wedding food.

I did my wedding at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse which is down around King and Parliament. They had a few different Caterers, and I went for Herrera's. I found them to be a bit terrible with keeping in touch with me, but the food was excellent and affordable. We had 120 people there with room to spare. It's a beautiful building inside and out, one of toronto's first schoolhouses.

We went with just having appetizers and a buffet style, I think we had it down to like 15 a head as far as I can remember. I didn't have more than some buns and hummus because I was so busy flapping my lips and dancing, but the reviews were great from everybody else. I found them to be very professional, no surprises, their staff was relaxed and friendly, but had some trouble with making sure everything was nailed down. They were bad with the back and forth emailing. Poking your head in is probably the best approach. Having the buffet also kept the cost down because there was no need to have three plates.. two forks.. etc etc. Would highly reccomend them.

Whenever I have emailed the owner (and I did quite a bit even after I paid the deposit) she emailed me promptly and when I requested a call - she was right there. of course, this all happened in the low season. We have already picked out our meal and apps, etc. We are no where near 15 a head though including the linens, etc. (At Enoch you have to rent everything - keep that in mind - it does add up) We are doing a sit down with beef tenderloin, only three courses, no champagne toast.

I, too, do mtg planning. Had one of our worst food experiences there, and they tried desperately to not admit it. Eventually they took responsibility, in the way of a make good on another rental. Food 2nd time much better. Dynamic Hospitality is NOT one of the most accommodating venue owners in the city; they seem to have sliding prices, never the same twice. I always quote LOW numbers to them, because they have very fine print about penalties for reduction in numbers. I love the venue for the size and how it functions from the meeting point of view, (great sightlines, ability to expand up to 300) but certainly not for the behind the scenes. They are VERY VERY slow about returning calls and getting info out.

It was the place in general. I take great pride in ensuring that everything is in order before my event. I had printed out a seating arrangement for them with names, food choices and, most importantly, allergies. When I got there at four p.m. on the event day (to start at 6 p.m.), they asked me if I had the food choices list because they never got it and they needed it hours ago. However, I had spoken to the venue numerous times throughout the day, and they never mentioned it. By then, I was hours away from my office and couldn't get them everything they needed. As well, they completely ignored my allergy specifications and gave people meal they could not eat. The servers spoke no English and so that was no help to people in finding out what they were eating (which was basically just slop anyhow). The power went out an hour before our event so our band could not set up. They didn't have the heat on in the area where we were doing cocktails. It was supposed to be full open bar, but they only had one server for 270 guests, so you were lucky if you got a drink, and when you did get a drink, it had to be completely standard fare, even though we were paying for premium bar. You couldn't get anything fancier than a vodka and orange juice. The wine selection was horrifying and they wouldn't let us bring in our own wine. Lazar, I could go on for days and days; trust me, if I complain publically about a place then it really sucked.

Would you consider going just outside the GTA? We had our reception at On the Twenty in Jordan, and we wouldn't have changed a thing after the fact! We found in our experiences looking around that the value increased significantly when leaving the GTA. Most importantly, our requests were very much catered to and every last detail was taken care of. This location suited us quite well personally though. And I think our guests liked getting out of town and doing some wine tasting; some easily drove back into the city at night. Let me know if you want more info.

That said, I've also gone to a reception at Monsoon right downtown, and it was really fantastic! Food and ambience were both great!! Apparently their off-peak season (summer) is the way to go.

It very much depends on what kind of atmosphere you're looking for. I think that both of these spaces comfortably seat your projected capacity.

Just went to a wedding 2 wks ago at Meron Banquet hall on Steeles, w of Dufferin. Was astonished to find that nice a hall in one of those strip malls up there. Was a really lovely wedding, they did the ceremony in one room, recep in another.

Consider these (I have booked events for my corporation at all of these, and they have all been excellent). For full service (they provide linens, tables, food, booze), St. Andrews Club, Estates of Sunnybrook, Old Mill, Eglinton Grand, Rosewater Supper Club. For venues where YOU have to hire the catering separately, and pay extra for all those little details, Casa Loma, Carlu, The Manor at Bob Rumball Centre (a hidden gem), Liberty Grand. Any one of these would be ideal for weddings.

I got engaged about a couple of weeks ago. I live in LA and fiance lives in Toronto. We are trying to plan a wedding for summer of 2010. We both like The Eglinton Grand and Palais Royale. We're trying to keep cost down and The Eglington Grand has very attractive prices. But I have also heard very negative reviews regarding their service. Can anyone please post their experience with The Elignton Grand. Can you let me know of an alternative place if you don't recommend TEG? The same kind of feel... we like the looks and feel of Palais Royale and TEG... Old Hollywood. Palais Royale just seems so pricey. I would really appreciate all the help.

The wedding itself will be on the smaller side ~80 ppl. sit down dinner with plenty of dancing. We do not have a big budget for this wedding. Many places that we have looked into offer rooms/halls/restaurants for very small groups or very large groups. We seem to be right in the middle where we have to either cut or add a lot of guests. We want the look to have character something that would be remembered but also have the feel of an intimate setting.

I had my wedding at the Carlu in June. It was absolutely amazing! We had the ceremony in the Sky Room and reception in the round room. It isn't cheap but they have a package deal for weddings June - August (I guess fewer corporate events then). Only catch is you need a minimum of 150 people. We used 10tation catering and it was fabulous. They have 4 preferred caterers but I'm pretty sure you could use your own. I would highly recommend it. Everyone from my friends to the grandparents were really impressed with the beauty of the room and the guy in charge for the evening made sure I didn't have to worry about a thing.

It's very cozy, maximum seating is about 130-140. They do have a cute little chapel and a nice small town full of flowers, so you can do your ceremony, photos and reception in the same place.

Here's the website if you want to look at the place - we had our wedding there and though we had a little mishap with the soup, everything was wonderful there.

old mill - wedding factory! you don't get that special feeling because everywhere you turn there is another bride with her party. i imagine this is mer pronounced on a saturday.

i went to two memorable weddings this past year:

(i) Steamwhistle brewery - loved this. you can bring your own caterer!!! Good service - bride was quite pleased with everything EXCEPT they are renovating their outside space and it was supposed to be ready for her wedding (sept 08) and wasn't so that was a bit or an annoyance. however, non issue for 2009 weddings.

(ii) i went to a wedding at the children's peace theatre - a place i never knew existed. http://www.childrenspeacetheatre.org/ourhome/ourhome.html
anyways - the wedding was outside and then they had the reception at a restaurant (Globe Bistro - amazing!). it was a great venue for people that are doing a non-church wedding. they did it at dusk and it was gorgeous.

Caterer rec: I used Pantry in August to cater a shower. i ended up paying something RIDICULOUS, like $20 a head? maybe? the food was delicious, timely, and exactly to my specifications. I made multiple changes and asked for advice and I was on a limited budget and they were still wonderful!! They had just opened that month, so it's likely the prices have increased somewhat - but the owner Liz and her husband - this is their passion and it's evident by the way their customers are treated. Worth a look.

We used By David's for our wedding (after Sumptuous Catering folded!) and they were accomodating, easy and the food was delish! Guests told us it was easily the best wedding food they had. We didn't buy a wedding cake and just went with their house-made dessert table and all loved it! Not cheap, but not expensive (we had hors d'ouevres, soup, salad, a choice of mains, bread and the dessert table with tea/coffee--$40 a head, but then there are the rentals, chef fees etc on top of that, so it worked out to about $90 a head taxes included).

Thank you to everyone who has put out an idea or suggestion! This has been the most helpful website I could find!

I’m newly engaged and my Fiancé and I are looking for a place to hold our wedding ceremony and reception (one place preferably) and keeping it under $5000.00 tax total all in! ( I know it can be done!)

Keep the ideas coming!

That poster is having a smaller wedding, so some of the suggestions may not be applicable, but some might work (eg. Le Select's private rooms can hold up to 70, combined) -- and that poster's cost limitations are probably similar to yours.

If you'd consider having your wedding on a Sunday, that would probably open up a world of options. A lot of restaurants that are otherwise closed on Sundays (ie. most restaurants) will open up to host special events. If Sunday is an option for you, I'd start making some calls to some of your favourite restaurants with a medium price point to see if they're available.

Congrats and good luck!

Ok so here is a good one for all of you experienced wedding planners!
I have a super strict budget of $9,000 and a guest list of 150. That $,9000 needs to include the venue, food and alcohol. The only thing I have working in my favour is that we're looking at a friday next summer which i know is loads cheaper than saturday's. Does anyone have any suggestions for in and around th GTA??

my friend got married @ pioneer village for $6k (or something like that) with 100 people. this was five years ago. she did a buffet dinner on a saturday night. the food was great - not foodie-wise but good quantities, well executed, and pretty darn tastey! no foam, no truffles, no molten lava cakes. just good, solid food. she had an open bar. DJ and photographer were friends of the family, cake/dessert table was a gift from the wedding party (catered from some friend of someone's family who has a bakery in guelph), no flowers/fancy centrepieces.
