Deli battle royal -- contenders?
Hey all -- my dad's birthday is coming up in a month and he's decided he wants to have people over for some really good build-your-own deli sandwiches. Naturally the conversation turned to the best places to go for the ingredients, so what are your favorites?
We're looking specifically for the best smoked turkey, roast beef, potato salad, cole slaw, and sandwich bread (they don't all have to come from the same place). They live in Menlo Park, so suggestions close-ish to there would be nice, but if you tell me I absolutely have to throw a cooler into the car and head to SF, SJ, or the East Bay, so be it :-)
We're planning on doing a 'battle royal' pre-party taste-off once we get a good list going, and I'll post the results.
Already on it are Draeger's, Dittmer's, The Cheese House, Schaub's, and Eric's Gourmet. I'll scope out Oakville Grocery, Whole Foods, and Andronico's to see if they make their own deli or bring in Boar's Head or similar.
Thanks!

Woodside Deli on Woodside Road in Redwood City. My "gold standard" for an italian style deli.
Villa in San Jose on Lincoln comes very close, but for their prepared foods not their meats.

I like Dittmar's a lot. For some very good ham and Polish cold cuts there is Polish Deli. Most of the cold cuts are from good Chicago Polish markets. It is flown in weekly so it is always very fresh. Down the street I used to like the light rye from Palo Alto Baking on California. They've changed owners since I've last been there so can't say how it is these days. Milk Pail near Dittmars has a good selection of bread from almost every local Eastern European (and Amercian) bakery.
I haven't been yet, but I was really impressed with the SF store ... Europa Express. It is a Russian Market that has a dizzying selection of cold cuts. One of the partners opened a store in Mountain View.

Willie Bird smoked turkey is excellent. I think I've bought it at Andronico's.

Aha, another believer! Willie's smoked turkey is our Thanksgiving bird . . . guess it's just about time to reserve one.
