Oyster Hunt

Hey hounds. I have a huge craving for oysters on the half shell but have only been able to find places that charge 2.50 per oyster. Are there any good places in or around LA that sell oysters for about a buck an oyster? Any help is appreciated.

  1. The gumbo pot at the farmer's market (3rd/fairfax)

    1. Been a while, but I used to buy em for about 75ยข each at Santa Monica Seafood, suppliers to many area restaurants including Ocean Ave Seafood, which has a pretty good happy hour too.

      1. Not sure if they still do it, but Mirabelle on Sunset had Happy Hour 7 days a week and they were really cheap (maybe $1 each or something like that). Also, through the end of October, they are celebrating their anniversary with a 3-course meal (5 or 6 main options including fish) for less than $20. We have our rezzies! Also, if you go DO NOT miss their phenomenal Ahi Tuna Tartare (best I have had!).

        1. Had some at the 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro. Still not cheap though. Buy fresh raw oysters at 99 Ranch Markets for 69 cents apiece. Crack it open yourself.
Best recent oyster experience was in Vegas at the Main Street Microbrewery. A large schooner of cold lager beer and a dozen oysters on the half shell...life is good!

          1. ocean ave. seafood's happy hour has them for a buck-fiddy if i remember correctly and prices haven't gone up.

And don't forget, Ocean Ave is a KCRW Merchant...so, a great discount on food and booze.
The happy hour is fantastic...all the little food bits they offer are great and at a great price.

            2. You can get a great variety at Quality Seafood on the Redondo Beach Pier. IIRC, they run about $1.25.

We were there -- Quality Seafood on the Redondo Pier -- this past weekend, and they feature a terrific selection. You pay only for the oysters and not for the atmosphere...although it's pretty nice to sit outside on the pier!

              2. Haven't been there for a while but while on LA jury duty, I took a stroll to Grand Central Market and got some small Eastern oysters really cheap. Those I thought were the best for oysters on the half shell.
