I've seen them at Manilla Oriental Market on Mission although I haven't looked lately.

I see them all the time at the Chinese markets as several posters have already stated...May Wah on Clement, 99 Ranch, Manilla Oriental Market, Sunset Super, etc. In fact, I just had some last week on Thursday bought from 99 Ranch at $3.99 a pound. THe crabs were decent and had some roe in it.

Since most of the blue crabs here in MD are not actually from MD, I doubt you would find an authentic MD blue crab on the west coast.

Crab season is over in Maryland, and winter crabs are gotten by dredging or cultivation. Not the good stuff.

Second question - if they were in season, where would you get them? I have never, ever seen a whole live blue crab on the west coast. Anywhere. I have had crab cakes with blue crab, but that ships. Trust me, I'd notice, my dad and I crabbed the chester river when I was growing up, and I am a huge fan.

I have gotten over my snobbishness, and believe that a fresh dungeness can be the equal of a fresh blue. I prefer, strongly, a blue, but such is life. The trick, as always, is getting either of them fresh --- and out here, that means dungeness.

Steve h, is right. From the Maryland State Fisheries Commission Website:

          Blue Crab Season
          Apr 1 - Dec 15
Closed Wednesdays Except handlines, dip nets and pots at private piers
          http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/...

Steve, Dungeness Crab season kicks off here in about six weeks. It's worth it to go get the fresh crab right when they come in. Half Moon Bay is a good place to go.

            howdy sgwood415,

just returned from baltimore on monday (deb and i had to catch the last yankees game of the regular season sunday afternoon at camden yards). we had great crab everywhere we went but special mention has to go out to regi's on light street.

i'm hoping to be back in the bay area come november. put the crabs on notice.

I've seen live blue crabs at Chinese supermarkets in the Bay Area such as 99 Ranch or Marina, though they sometimes look a bit worse for the wear. Perhaps you can call the markets near you to see if they have any in stock. I've purchased them from the Marina Food in San Mateo / Foster City in the past.

We bought blue crab in Oakland's Chinatown. I don't know the name of the seafood market. I drive around while my DH runs in and buys,
