Looking For Unique, Great Food In Vernon, CT Area

ctflowers Sep 30, 2007 10:37 AM

I guess I got spoiled foodwise living in Atlanta, Georgia most of my life! I moved to CT eleven years ago, and unfortunately, I don't think the variety or quality of restaurants compare. I live near Vernon, CT and am looking for great (not mediocre) restaurants in the area, besides Lotus and Little Mark's Barbecue.

Can someone explain to me why there are liquor stores and pizza places on every corner in this area??? LOL...just curious.

I don't know the Vernon area particularly well, but whenever I'm passing through the area I usually stop at Rein's Deli near I-91. Great old-school Delicatessen fare, and about as good as it gets outside of NYC. As far as the pizza places, CT has one of the highest (if not the highest, it shifts between NJ, CT, and RI) Italian populations in the country. Liquor stores? You're on your own for that one, I have no idea.

Also, it might be a bit of a hike, but the Altnaveigh Inn in Storrs I remember having excellent food (it's fairly upscale), but I haven't been there in 7 years.

UConn students. When I was a Husky, we lived on pizza and beer, and subs from Ted's Giant Grinders in Storrs. I know Willington Pizza has quite a following, and Rein's deli is awesome. Otherwise, I'm afraid you're better off driving toward Hartford.
