Drinks before Jean-Georges tonight, where to go?

cbw Sep 28, 2007 06:28 AM

Having dinner tonight at Jean-Georges to celebrate a birthday. We want to meet up for drinks beforehand. Some places that have been suggested. Asiate - the bar at the Mandarin Oriental. Per Se lounge? the Modern restaurant. debating whether the Modern is too far away in fancy clothes and shoes.

Any other place close by that we should think about?

The MO Bar I think it is called is the 35th floor of The Mandarin Oriental. Amazing drinks with amazing views of the city... but expensive!

I've heard the exact same thing from visiting relatives.

Third Mo Bar. Also the Lobby Bar at the same place is good. Also the bar scene at the Stone Rose is good. All located at the Time Warner Center.

Up the street from the TW Cener is The Hudson Hotel--has a collection of good bars from the Library or Garden area, to the Cafeteria etc.

Do you need reservations? It's a big birthday, I think it is going to expensive no matter what. Might as well celebrate!

You might as well call and see... they have tables that are next to the window and then booths that are in the center, the center being a little bit more intimate, but the tables being with the spectacular view. (Being if I remember correctly and if it has not changed).

I would recommend calling and just seeing if they can set something special up for you.

Modern Bar is going to be a bit far, although you can cab it. Bar at the Mandarin Oriental would be gorgeous! If you want to keep the price down a little, San Domenico and Park Blue are both nearby and great loungey places to unwind. But if you're going to splurge, you might as well go all out!

Nougatine - the bar inside of Jean George, is really nice too. It's not much of a change to go there and walk three steps to the left to be at your table for dinner, but there's a nice bar if you get a seat and good snacks.

The Rose Bar in the Time Warner building --think it is the 4th floor. It has a terrific park view

The Modern gets insanely packed on Friday nights because MoMA is open late, so I wouldn't recommend it. I actually really love Cafe Grey for drinks. The bartenders pour some really nice cocktails and they have delicious (and free) breadsticks.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. We ended up at the MoBar at the Mandarin Oriental. Despite the fact that the lobby lounge was pretty empty at 7:30ish, they weren't seating anyone besides hotel guests. I wonder though if all those guests ever showed up.

Anyway drinks were fine. Only had one and I didn't think it was as wonderful as some of the drinks I've had at the fine cocktails lounges, but it worked and then we were off to Jean Georges.

Thanks for reporting back - good to know in case of out of town guests who aren't staying there. Which drink did you try, BTW?
