Casual/Mid-priced to expensive Italian for Great Pasta

Need suggestions - Out of town friend visiting Monday and she's looking for recommendation where to have a great pasta dish. Does not have to be trendy, but hip would be fine. Good solid food is important. She has a fairly sophisticated pallet. Any neighborhood is fine.

Not trendy nor hip, but the spaghetti and meatballs at Le Zie (7th and 20th) are amazing, and around $12 IIRC. The lasagna is awesome, too, but spaghetti and meatballs is the thing to get.

That really is a great meal, the Spaghetti and meatballs. I live in the neighborhood but have been out of town for 3 months. Now I know what I'll be eating the night I get back!

i actually like the spaghetti at patsy's (i go to the one on uws). good meatballs and solid sauce. some of their other pastas look good as well. i though hte meatballs at le zie have good flavor but were a bit dry.

Via Emilia and Malalesta both have great pasta, though not quite "hip" (which is hard to define)

Hey there,
You could try to get into Lupa as a walk in. Fun to grab a drink at the bar anyway while you wait. Also try Po, Crispo and a great place in the East Village called Cacio e Pepe. I've have great pastas there the two times I went.
