Here's a link to the New American hub in the Places database for the SF Bay Area to get you started,

Some top restaurants that would fall into "New American":

      Acme Chophouse
      Bix
      Boulevard
      Coco500
      Fly Trap
      Jack Falstaff
      Maverick
      Michael Mina
      Myth
      One Market
      Range
      Salt House
      Scott Howard
      Spork
      Town Hall
      TWO

Might be too few or too many on that list depending on where you draw the lines between New American, California, and French.

Blue Plate - more casual and neighborhoody than some of the other places. Plus you could get a drink at The Argus before/after.

Maverick would be nice as well, though you'd want to move on the reservation now. If they don't have one on OpenTable, then often have some room if you call.
