vegetarian street food in Harlem
A nice street food option for vegetarians:
At ACP on 125th, in front of that Adam Clay Powell building is a woman selling 1/2 pita for $3, whole for $5. There's a sign that says, "AAishatu's" (I think). Though it says vegetarian burger, it's not a patty, but vegetables (cabbage, carrots, onions..to name a few) and potato stir-fried with some curry and spices. She adds tahini sauce, and if you want, soy sauce, and hot sauce, all this gets scooped into a whole wheat pita.
can street food just be considered food you eat in the street? because uptown juice bar is outstanding; on 125th street, btwn 5th and lenox, been going here since high school and I ain't even a vegetarian! a deliciously overflowing platter of 4 menu choices for around $8-$9 has maybe 20 different options on the steam table; vegetarian lasagna, pasta, mock chicken, greens, lentils, salads, fritters; so much good stuff and so affordable, and great juice as well since of course, it is a juice bar. they also have a number of veggie patties; you'll find the place always crowded with veg-types and itals.
re: rose water
I actually haven't seen her since that time, although from Mark Hokoda's always excellent Chow Digest it appears that he has been there, as there were details about Aaishatu that didn't make it into my post, but were indeed true.
I can only add that the woman told me she is based in Brooklyn actually. She's a stage manager who was in between gigs...and came up to Harlem to check things out....I hope it's going well for her. When i posted was about 2 hours after I got the sandwich from her, and that was a Wednesday night. I just hate for you to go out there and not find her, though. The last few times I've gone by in a bus at night I didn't see her.
