Restaurant in Californication on Showtime?

LAfoodfiend Sep 26, 2007 03:56 PM

In almost every episode, there is a scene shot in this one restaurant. It has red brick walls, a fireplace in the center of the room, a long separate bar area and funky colorful art on the walls. I wish I could find a picture online but I can't. Is this a real restaurant, and if so, where is it? I want to go there!

I've wondered that too! I think it is a real restaurant and it's definitely in LA as the show is shot here.

I haven't seen the show but from your description, that sounds like Hal's in Venice. Here's a link which has a picture of the restaurant but you can't really see the bar, which is off to the right in the picture.

You're right in that it sounds just like Hal's from the description, but it isn't.

Really? I saw the pilot and I was sure the bad double-date scene was shot in Hal's! And I'm positive that the bookstore scene was shot at that little bookstore up the street on Abbot Kinney (Equinox?)...

There is a scene in Equator Books, but the restaurant they show most often is definitely not Hal's. The double date restaurant might be, but I'm pretty sure LAfood and I are referring to a different one which appears in every episode.

        Hal's in Venice.

Correction! I think that the double date and perhaps one other scene was shot at Hal's but the restaurant that they show more often, not sure. Could be a set. (Love that show!)

I doubt it's a set, it's quite big with a full bar/lounge area and a separate dining area.

i haven't seen the show yet, but that restaurant description sounds exactly like lucques.

Nope, not Lucques! It's really quite perplexing.

I'm glad you posted because I've been trying to figure it too! Doesn't look familiar at all. I hope someone knows...maybe eaterla?

wow, judging from the description i was convinced it had to be lucques. someone must know! maybe at the end of the credits they do some sort of acknowledgement...?

or does the show have message boards on showtime's web site, imdb or some other site? maybe you can post the inquiry there.

I am on the verge of becoming dangerously obsessed. The end credits just say "Shot in Los Angeles" (thank God for Video On Demand). The website does have a Californication Wiki that includes a Californication Guide To Los Angeles, but this place isn't on it yet. Gah.

This is the bar area. I can't find a clip with a good enough view of the dining room, but perhaps this will look familiar to someone! There's a great unobstructed view of the bar in the last 5 seconds.

well you're right, it's certainly neither hal's nor lucques. those couches along the wall make me think it's more of a lounge...?

              2. Mattapoisett in LA RE: LAfoodfiend Sep 27, 2007 12:38 PM

I saw a site that said most of the Filming occurs in the Palisades. You might try there.

Most of it is in Venice, with some exceptions like Booksoup on Sunset. This is so far the only place that I don't recognize, which is why I'm so determined to find out!

They have a producer's blog on the showtime website, and also message forums. You have to become a member to read the forums, so I couldn't read them -- but it sounds like you might just have to join so you can solve this riddle :-)

Considering this wasn't even my query, I have already wasted far too much time on this! Yesterday I spent several hours reading the imdb forums with no luck. A girl's got to draw the line somewhere.

at this point i'd say just call the production department at showtime. someone over there MUST know.

A similar question can be asked regarding the "Men of a Certain Age" show wherein the guys eat at a Norms. Is it the one on La Cienega or in the valley on Sherman Way or...........???

i've often wondered the same thing :)

"The guys get together almost daily to lend mutual support and bust each other's chops over meals at the Norms in Van Nuys and on morning hikes...Over at Norms, the restaurant's sign and frontage are the real things. But since the place famously "never closes," only the pilot episode was taped inside the busy eatery. Since then, the guys' booth and surrounding areas have been replicated at Paramount."
