Good food in the Wheeling, W.V. area?

  • 4

I have recently moved to the St. Clairsville, Ohio area and I am seeking some ideas on some good places to eat?

  1. I know this will sound insane, but the restaurant inside the Oglebay Lodge is really good. The more upscale one is called Ihlenfeld Dining Room. I haven't eaten there in a few years (the last few times I've been there we opted for the more casual restaurant, which is ok, but nothing spectacular.) The mushroom soup there was the best I've ever had. And I had a steak and crab dish that I could eat every week. The meals are really good for a hotel restaurant, and you can NOT beat the beautiful view out the huge windows - it's breathtaking.

Also a rec for the dining room at Oglebay Lodge. There are a couple of old time restos that have been there for a million years that are still good. Ernie's Steak House and Figaretti's were where we went when I was kid and we still go when we drive thru Wheeling. Believe it or not, Wheeling used to be the summer home of the NYC Mob outfit and used to be filled with Italian restaurants. My mother and I were once sent drinks by some characters who looked straight out of the Godfather movies. Share feedback if you go.

      1. Gee, Wheeling's a tough one for food. (Great architecture, though.) I usually like to blast on through at 70 mph. Jane and Michael Stern have written about a cafeteria in St. Clairsville that is, I believe, adjacent to one of your strip malls alongside I-70. It may be called Mehlman's Cafeteria, but please correct me if I'm wrong. In any case, I haven't tried it.
