My friend, Layton and his business partner Jason finally opened their new restaurant

Commonwealth Cafe

on 30th Street just before Upas Avenue as you are coming from University Avenue. Their original plan was to be open from 4 pm to 4 am making them one of the few places to go for late night munching. The city however has put a hold on that late hour and will only let them stay open till midnight. Until they can get this ironed out they will be open from noon to midnight but are working on getting those extended hours.

Dropped by Saturday night to try things out. Their menu is on the wall listing breakfast of eggs, bacon, toast and omelettes. They have different sandwiches which includes different types of burgers (hormone and antibiotic free), BLT, PBJ, grilled cheese, hot dogs, chili, buffalo wings, mac & cheese, different fries, baked potatos, homemade pies, brownies. Their sweet onion relish is wonderful.

I ordered a plain burger (came with mayo, pickles, tomato and lettuce $5.75), an order of handcut fries (huge basket for $2.75), corn on the cob (baked/roasted with lightly spiced butter $3.50) and a side of their sweet onion relish. Their burger was juicy and the handcut fries were thin, hot and crunchy. The sweet onion relish I could eat just by itself as a munchie. A friend had the Texas Football (freetos topped with chili, onions and cheese $4.50) which I kept stealing samples it was so good.

I'll go back. The restaurant is fun, informal, and I love the late night hours.
