Sesame Tofu (MSP)
Hi, my family just moved to minneapolis and I'm wondering where I can get sesame tofu. I want it to be deep fried tofu with a sugary-soy-sauce-red-pepper-flake type sauce. I've had it at a couple of places here and it was more like baked tofu with ketchup. My four year old loved it but it wasn't what I'm missing. The closer to uptown and eat street the better.
Thanks!

I had sesame mock duck at the Lotus Uptown last night and think it may be what you're looking for. They'll prepare tofu the same way. (Entree #41: Spicy Sesame Dish: Lightly battered chicken breast or tofu in a special spicy sesame sauce on a bed of [deep fried, puffy, white] cellophane noodles, served with a side of fried or white rice.)

Hello and welcome to the Twin Cities! If you are willing to venture up to Dinkytown, you should try out Camdi Restaurant. They offer a sesame tofu (or yam!) dinner on their vegan menu. I have yet to try it so I can't say whether it matches your description or not, but I've liked many of their dishes on the first page of the menu (with mock duck, tofu, or veggie options).
Here is a link to their menu: http://www.camdirestaurant.com/menu.html -
it sounds like rainbow chinese is probably my best bet.
Thanks! Otherwise I'm going to have to buy a frydaddy.›4 Replies-

I have no experience with finding this dish, but you could also try Yummy (man do I hate that word) on Nicollet as well. Also, don't discount simply asking a place if they can whip it up for you. I was at Hoban (Korean) in Eagan one day and was in the mood for some pan-fried tofu. I asked and they brought a huge plateful out as a side dish -- it was very good. I would expect the same result at most good Asian places. The sauce you are describing sounds like something like chung king preparations at Szechuan places (although that wouldn't be soy/sugary, more oily).

re: MSPD
MSPD is right-- anyplace that does chinese-american sesame chicken (or general tso's) should be able to do a tofu version. i'd try tea house in st paul--closer to you, on eat street, rainbow is a good rec. i'm blanking on chinese-american places in uptown, apart from lee ann chin's on hennepin-- does lee ann's even cook to order? i haven't been since i was a little kitten.

re: soupkitten
Not unless your order is for about 60 gallons... ;-) I would have suggested that the OP special order at Lee Ann Chin's but that would be impossible - it's all steam table food that's been pre-cooked. I don't think they have tofu on their menu. But the sesame chicken used to be a guilty pleasure.

If sweet is what you're after, Bravo Bakery on Grand Ave, alas in St. Paul not Uptown/Minneapolis, does sesame "chicken" with mock chicken, which is tofu. I tried their sesame "beef" (the mock beef was wheat gluten) and found it too sweet, but, maybe that's what you're after.

re: The Dairy Queen
My friend has been to Bravo like 30 times, and every time she wants to try something new, but loves her old standby, which I don't know if it's what you're looking for (not deep fried), but here's a pic:

If you call them they'll tell you whether the sesame chicken is deep fried I'm sure.

Have you tried Rainbow Chinese? They don't list Sesame Tofu on the menu but they do have Sesame Chicken and I've had vegetarian friends substitute fried tofu for the meat in other entrees. Generally Rainbow is a pretty reliable Chinese-American destination and it's on eat street.
