Need special occaison sushi recommendation

I'm looking for a great sushi place to take my mother to on her birthday (her request). I would love to go to O-Ya, which I stumbled on recently (and loved whatever their chicken broth/truffle dumpling soup is), but think it might intimidate her a bit (she seems to think I take her to places that are "too New York-y").

Can anyone recommend a place that has as (or almost as) fabulous food, as relaxed & elegant an atmosphere, but maybe a little more low-key menu? I think what she's hoping for is one of those platters that has a zillion different items arrayed on it, so I think we really could go almost anywhere, but I'd love to wow her with how delicious sushi can be.

Boston/Cambridge preferred, but any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

One more, even tho it's out of town. Oga's, in Wayland, becasue the atmosphere is so serene and un-New York, yet they can still handle high end without the assembly line feeling I sometimes get at Oishi.

If you wanted special occasion sushi but not O-ya, I'd go to Uni.

Judging from the OPs criteria, Uni would have the same drawbacks as O-Ya. Neither is a place to get "one of those platters that has a zillion different items arrayed on it".

Douzo, Fugakyu or Osihii would probably work best.

I am afraid I must respectfully disagree with the Fugakyu portion of the recommendation. I've been three times (the third under duress), and been underwhelmed by the knifework, the quality of the fish, and the construction of the sushi. The third time I tried ton katsu, which was tasteless and cooked to shoe leather consistency. The only saving grace to the place is its wonderful interior!

Interestingly, the same folks own one of my favorites, New Ginza in Watertown. It has consistently been excellent for sushi and for kitchen-prepared dishes, and might be worth adding to your list of places to consider!

How about the downtown Oishii? Duozo might also work for your needs.
