T.O. Steakhouse Quandry

I have invited six business acquaintances who I know only causally to a thank-you dinner while attending a conference in Tornoto next month.

I am looking for a nice mid-range steakhouse close to the financial district. I am concerned that these folks seem rather low-key and could be overwhelmed by the menu prices at Bardi's or Hy's. Is there any other nearby option better than Canyon Creek Chophouse but more reasonable than these two? I really want this to be a comfortable evening for all. Thanks!

  1. The Keg on York Street is a little more upscale than some of the other locations, and tends to have a bit of a Bay Street vibe (but not too intimidating). I've heard biz-travellers report that they find it very comfortable, and the food is reliable although it's by no means Harbour Sixty (but neither are the prices!). You could always go for a drink to scope it out first.

The Keg on York Street has a lot going for it and I think it is a great choice too.

    2. I'll third the Keg, and I've noticed how it seems to be a guilty enjoyment for some here (i.e. we feel we shouldn't like it, being a chain, but it's too good not to like). I've never met a piece of meat there that I didn't enjoy profusely.

      1. The Keg is the first place I thought of when I read the OP a few hours ago but was hesitant to suggest it as a first reply for fear it would be dissed as not 'chowish' enough (as vorpal has intimated). I'm glad to come back now and see my orginal instinct affirmed.

        1. I must admit, though I think I can do aswell a job on the Q myself so I don't frequent them, it is at that very Keg that I first tried ordering a steak rare -- it was great and I'll always remember it...plus, a predictable, consistant atmosphere and level of service IS worth something...

          1. Not that there's anything wrong with the York St. Keg, but why not spend a few minutes in a cab, and head up to the Keg Mansion? Much more interesting decor, and might give your friends something to talk about.

I am a little confused that everyone posting so far seems to think the Keg establishments are better than Canyon Creek - which was the OP's stipulation. I find CC much more personable, better value and tastier than the Keg any day, without the slightly frat-house "I'm your best buddy" approach and relentless upselling of the Keg waiters in my experience. Good value wines and an outstanding pork chop.

To go one better than CC downtown near the financial district (and one better means a considerable financial leap, possibly minimized by judicious ordering) I would suggest Tom Jones, very old school, in a neat atmosphere - or even Cyrano's on a good night.

CC = outstanding porkchop no doubt. But the steak is better at The Keg in my experience.

Cuz there is no comparison at The Keg for pork chop? The Keg doesn't have pork chop on the menu...

                    Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I was simply trying to agree that the pork chops are outstanding at CC.

I was also trying to say that I think Keg steaks are better than CC steaks IMO.

Ops I didn't mean it in that way. But I agreed that the Keg has better steaks than CC. :)

I've always wanted to try Cyrano's (loved the name) but never had -- what do you recomemnd, and what are their good nights?
