Good Breakfast Places in the South End?

I am going out to breakfast in the South End tomorrow morning with a friend, any suggestions? The only place I have ever had breakfast there is Metropolis, which was very good, but I am looknig for something new.

  1. Charlie's!

    I do love Metropolis, though.

I usually LOVE Metropolis but had a so-so meal there last weekend. My DC wanted to make her own omelette and was dismayed by the lack of ingredient selection. She ended up getting pancakes, I think, which were ok. I got my favorite scrambled eggs w/boursin cheese and scallions; it came with multi-grain toast, I asked for an english muffin instead. They forgot and I got the multigrain, it was cold and tasteless. Got a side of grits which were good as always, although let's face it, they are really just a vehicle for butter and salt. I don't know, I wasn't that impressed with the meal this time, found myself wishing we had gone to Charlie's instead.

    2. Breakfast or brunch? I love Charlie's because they're open early and sometimes I just can't wait for the brunch places to open at 10 or so. For brunch I love Aquataine, and they have a special price fixe on Saturdays for $9.95. Masa does a great brunch too and when I was there a few weeks ago I heard that they were starting to do brunch on Saturdays in addition to Sundays.

        1. I really enjoy the brunch at Union Bar and Grill. I think the food is tasty and very good value as they usually do a prix-fixe brunch for about $15 or something. Plus the restaurant gets lots of light in the mornings, and it just feels like a very nice sophisticated place to go for breakfast.

Plus, they do Saturday Brunch, not just Sunday. And, it is also a place that takes reservations for brunch. Parking is also usually very easy nearby in the mornings.

I second the vote for Union - between the extremely affordable prix-fixe menu and the ability to make reservations, its a great brunch option and quite tasty. Enjoy!

I'd strongly recommend Union for Brunch. The special referred to above is actually $9.95 from 10-11 Sunday and all day Saturday.
It can get busy but they take reservations.
The menu items are also pretty reasonable. I'd recommend the mac sandwich (linguica, egg and cheese) $8.

            2. Union has great food with the breakfast/brunch deal already mentioned by others here. The atmosphere is great as well.

For something a little more casual, there is Mike's City Diner on Washington. They have typical diner fare with huge portions. I like their corn beef hash --- it isn't the stuff that you get out of a can.

EDITED TO ADD: the mike's link below is for the wrong mike's.

if its breakfast, its charlies or mikes diner. if its brunch, you've got lots to choose from. blueberry corncakes at charlies, however, is my kind of food!
