Anniversary Dinner - Ottawa / NCR

  • 3

I'm looking for a great restaurant no more than an hour's drive or so from Ottawa (in any direction). If I was to go to one restaurant on the Ontario side, where should I go? Of course, if you have other suggestions for restaurants on the Quebec side, let me know too. I'm looking for something maybe not so urban, something more rural / rustic, but still high quality, and of course, delicious.

Thanks.

  1. there are lots of suggestions on this board for ottawa.

    beckta
    wellington gastropub
    domus
    sweetgrass
    juniper

on gatineau side, it depends where you want to go. this time of year a drive through gatineau park would be nice, you could end up in chelsea and eat at one of the restaurants there. it is about a 30 min drive if going through the park. i also like wakefield, quebec. the wakefield inn has a nice spa and a restaurant. the food is not quite as nice as you will find in ottawa, but you can have cocktails by the piano in the bar first and then dinner.

On the Quebec side, about 1/2 hour from Ottawa the best choice is Les Fougeres. There are many comments about it on this Board and elsewhere. It is in an old house in the woods in Chelsea with a fantastic screened-in porch for eating outdoors if the temperature permits. Local ingredients cooked extremely well. Also, on the several occassions we have been there, we have been able to take a walk through the herb garden between courses.

There's also L'Orée du bois, or Bélair sur la rivière, both in Wakefield, I think. The latter is owned and run by the former chef from Benny's Bistro (in the French Baker).
