Where to buy whole suckling pig?
I'm looking for a place to buy a whole suckling pig in either San Francisco or the Peninsula. Any ideas?
Lunardis will special order them. But, they are expensive, ~$8/lb last winter.
Their supplier is Marsh and Sons on Highway 92 in Half Moon Bay. If you don't mind the drive, give them a call.
In addition to Lunardis, the "Chinese" style deli on Santa Clara in SJ used to offer to order them for me. They changed ownership almost a year ago and I did not find the new owners very customer service oriented, so I am not recommending them, but using them as an example....if you are close to a place that has roast ducks/chicken/pigs displayed in the window, ask if they will special order a suckling pig. IIRC, they wanted ~$5/lb in the mid 90s.
I asked my butcher in SF (Antonelli's in Calmart on California in Laurel Village) about suckling pigs last holiday season, and they said they could special order them with some advance notice. I would guess that most butchers would be able to special order them, but I may be wrong, or it may be a seasonal thing. Opted not to do the pig for Christmas dinner, as I thought it might traumatize my little nieces and nephew, and the in-laws prefer their meat/poultry/fish to be devoid of any identifying characteristics.
There's a butcher shop I've never been inside but see all the time while driving alongside the freeway from the West Street exit of 580. I think it's on the corner of West and that frontage road. They always have lots of specials signs in the window - frogs legs, pheasant, goat, etc. You might try them. I'll try to find the name unless somebody else knows it and posts. Robert?
The butchers at Piedmont Market or even Berkeley Bowl might be able to order for you.
