For your "last" night in NYC: Where would you go to get all decked out? (Black Tie)

Hi Hounds,

It's looking like I might spend two-three months in the Philippines for work, and sort of would like to plan one of those *perfect* NYC nights on the town where my sweetie and I can get all decked out and have a night on the town to remember.

Normally I love the $5 Hallal cart and sitting on a stoop, eating gelato from Il Lab, but I do have a lovely vintage Dior ball gown that I practically leveraged my tutition to afford three years ago when I was broke, and would love to bust that out for a wonderful upscale evening.

So here's my request:
- pre-dinner drinks
-dinner somewhere great that you could wear such an outfit (sweetie will be in suit I guess)
- perhaps dancing?

This isn't really my scene so I am entirely not sure of where would be appropriate, although some thoughts are perhaps: The Rainbow Room (does that even exist?), drinks at the Pierre, perhaps somewhere in the Time Warner Center?

Also, think more "old new york" and less "touristy trendy" ie, please nowhere like Buddakan or Pastis/mpd standbys.

Thank you very much!
Corgi

  1. Yep - the Rainbow Room exists. I brought some out of towners there for a drink last month. From what I understand you have to partake in the prix fixe dinner of about $200/pp in order to enter dining room. The lounge was packed with tourists but we did peak into the dining room - big band playing, lots of couples dancing and black tie. I think it's only open on the weekends, though.

    1. I'm so jealous of your vintage Dior!!
What types of cuisines? Any particular part of town?

Hmm... I'd say any part of town, and open to any cuisine, we are both very adventurous eaters.

And to be honest, it might not even have to be a crazy dinner, I'm not looking to go a zillion dollars into the hole here (haha barely have recovered from the dress!). So even just somewhere for cocktails would be fun.

So more just somewhere fun for drinks and possibly dancing... anywhere else besides the Rainbow room that you can think of?

The St. Regis - King Cole Bar
          Le Cirque
          Stone Rose in TWC
          The Pierre (Like u mentioned)
          The Dream Hotel (bars)

Drinks at Bemelman's Bar, then go across the Park and have dinner at Cafe des Artistes which I think might suit your vintage Dior very well!

Cafe des Artistes is way past its prime. Mediocre food, curt service, and uncomfortable, tightly packed seating.

Bemelmans Bar and a shorter walk across the street to Cafe Boulud is an option. Le Cirque occurred to me too, and you could pair that with cocktails at the 21 Club or the bar at Gilt.

Perfect perfect suggestions everyone, thank you so much! Bemelman's sounds great... now just debating about dinner.

Can anyone think of anywhere with dancing other than the rainbow room?
