Bee Cave BBQ?

Has anyone else tried Bee Caves BBQ? It's a trailer near the intersection of 2244 (Bee Caves Road) and River Hills, west of Loop 360.

I tried it yesterday, being hungry for chow, and with few options in between 360 and 71 on Bee Caves...

There are a few picnic tables with the trailer, but it's mostly a to-go operation. The menu seems to have a variety of meats, but if I remember correctly, side orders are limited to bags of chips. Drinks are either canned soft drinks or iced tea and lemonade.

I ordered a combination sandwich of brisket and chopped beef. It wasn't bad, with thick-sliced brisket and chopped beef which had the consistency of a sloppy joe. The sandwich could've used some heat, both in temperature and spiciness.

My biggest complaint was that the prices are appropriate for Westlake. My sandwich and a lemonade (NOT fresh, by the way) was $8.25. All in all, it's not bad, but Rudy's is better -- and cheaper.

Anyone else have any experiences with this place?

I live in that area and have never tried Bee Cave BBQ, although I'd like to suggest the possibly obvious County Line on the Hill for bbq in that area of town. I find their brisket to be dry, however their baby back ribs, beef ribs and peppered turkey are great. You could get a giant meal for 8.25 at County Line. I also adore the hill country views from that place. Another one of their draws is their homemade bread with honey butter and their strawberry lemonade, both are awesome.

Unfortunately food in that area is very sparse, and County Line is one of the few places I'd recommend between 360 and 71).

Have happily chowed @ Rocky Creek BBQ (17499 Ham Pool Rd) numerous times. Er, that is, picked up Q there. Fantastic brisket & smoky, fall-off-the-bone-tender ribs. Huge portions, good sides, Highly Rec.Big flag out front, weird hours, call first. Generally food in Westlake stinks, IMHO.
      (though this is Bee Cave)

So how are the prices? And is one portion big enough to split among two people? And what sides are offered?

I've been curious about Rocky Creek BBQ since I drive by it all the time on the way to Reimers Ranch. The bf has been to the Lazy Fork a while back and said he got some special which included a lot of good food but can't give me any more details. Since I bring the dog out with me, I don't want to leave her in the car for long so Lazy Fork's out but I can definitely make a pit stop at Rocky Creek.

Reasonable ($6-8/plate). Yes ! The usual(ps, cs, beans). They are all worthy versions. It's a drive-up window, so poochie's OK.

When you say that Rudy's is better, it makes Bee Cave BBQ sound pretty awful to me. However, you may not have meant it that way.

I actually tried Bee Cave BBQ right after I moved to Austin and thought the brisket and sausage were pretty bad, as were the sides. (At that time, they seemed to offer some kind of potato salad or cole slaw.) The meat tasted steamed; plus, there was very little smokiness. It could have been an off day. Or, they could be banking on a captive Westlake audience. I drive past there semi-regularly, but I've never had any desire to check it out again.

Thanks for the report, though. It's always good to have updates, especially when it's been a couple of years since I visited. Please let us know if their chow ever knocks your socks off.

They're definitely counting on a Westlake audience, not to mention a particular dearth of restaurants (good or otherwise) on Bee Caves between Loop 360 and Highway 71. As I didn't immediately notice a pit or smoker, I'd suspect that the BBQ is not cooked on site. (That's also a huge chunk of the problem with Bill Miller and some Pok-E-Jo's locations.)

And yes, I'll admit to liking Rudy's. (Even if the chain aspect makes me less of a hound.) I've never been a huge fan of central Texas BBQ, but find Rudy's among the less offensive. I think Kreuz's, Smitty's, and Black's are way overrated. (The best BBQ value in Lockhart is Chisolm Trail, where most of the locals eat.)

When it comes to regions of BBQ, I've always been impressed by the BBQ in the Lubbock area, believe it or not. I can point to several hound-worthy locations in Lubbock.

Good point about the off-site smoking at Bee Cave BBQ. I'd concluded the same thing; in fact, I think I even asked them about it. I can also recall being really bummed that their 'cue wasn't better, partly because I always get my hopes up when I see a barbecue trailer. If only they could all be delicious!

Plenty of chowhounds on this board like Rudy's, by the way. I'm just not one of them. It sounds like you've checked out quite a few of the local barbecue options, not to mention several good bets in the Lubbock area. I'll be sure to ask you for tips next time I'm driving out west.

Followup -- which BBQ trailer(s) do you suggest?

A little off topic I admit but in the same neighborhood more less. I recently tried Busters BBQ right off Hwy71 on 620 to have the pulled pork sandwhich. Pretty good(and I think even the worst BBQ in CTX is better than what you find in many other areas)but not as vinegary as I hoped for. Just add hot sauce. But as I was headed out to Hamilton Pool on Hamilton Pool Rd? I noticed about 3-4 BBQ joints/trailers out there that gave me an extra incentive to get out that way more and do some more hounding. Beautiful country of course and just another reason to get out that way. I noticed another place(I think a steakhouse) called the "Lazy Fork". Does anyone have any reviews of these places?
