  1. Baroque Luxe Lounge in DC Ranch was exactly what you're looking for. Unfortunately, it didn't do very well and closed a few months ago. I can't think of another great cocktail bar in Scottsdale like Milk and Honey or Pegu Club in NYC. Anyone else?

I can't think of anything close to those NYC places. I agree with azhotdish that Mastros (including Ocean Club and City Hall) have sophisticated-type bars, but they don't go into the detail you're talking about. You may want to try Merc Bar at the Esplanade at 24th St and Camelback. They have a NYC branch (just the two of them, I think), and I know they make a great martini, but I haven't been there in years. Good luck.

i certainly agree that mastro's is simply a sophisticated bar and doesn't go into the detail you're looking for. perhaps another recommendation, which again, might not be exactly what you're after, is AZ 88.

sidenote: Merc Bar is technically in Phoenix, not Scottsdale, but are fairly close in vicinity.

I would highly dissuade you from going to Merc Bar. I understand that some might enjoy this spot, but I found it completely dreadful...dark in a dingey way, smells of smoke, and I didn't find the cocktails to be particularly inventive or of a very high quality. Some friends took me there for the first time last May. They hadn't been there for several years, and they said they probably wouldn't go back again. Was it better a few years back, or is this the type of place that some people "outgrow"? The crowd seemed to be the early twenties, just out of college types. It (Merc Bar) just didn't have a very sophisticated feel. For a great cocktail, but not really a "bar" atmosphere, try Tarbell's or Mosaic. Stephanie, the bartender at Mosaic, always has a creative list of specialy drinks, and does the classics very well, too.

    2. the perfect manhattan is my drink of choice, and the best i've had in scottsdale is at mastro's steakhouse (w/single barrel gentleman jack). beware - have a designated driver, because you'll want more than one.
