Sushi in DC
I am new to Chowhound, and I thought I would share some thoughts about sushi in DC to encourage discussion of the subject.
My favorite place for sushi in DC -- I'm limiting myself to the city proper -- was Japan Inn, but it closed a few years ago. They had top-notch fish and lots of authentic little dishes. The best entry on the menu was the chirashi. For $20, it was an astonishing array of the finest sashimi, including all sorts of items that you wouldn't see if you just ordered the regular sashimi or sushi, plus rice topped with all the neat Japanese vegetable items.
Since it closed, my wife and I have become regulars at Yosaku. It's an unassuming place in upper Northwest, well away from tourist crowds. They have the finest fish at the price point, just below the fanciest joints in town. We eat there at least once a week.
The places that are popular are good: Sushi-Ko and Kaz. I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to go to either.
But the greatest experience is Makoto. You have to make a reservation at least a month in advance, it's a kaiseki meal, and it is pricey. It's a wonderful experience, too, with the intimate space (I prefer the bar, where you watch the chefs at work, to the tables with uncomfortable chairs).
I'd welcome thoughts about other places in town.
