office treat!

at our office, its tradition to bring in a treat to eat whenever you're celebrating something...since my coworker and I are both passing our probation (hopefully :P) in a couple of weeks, we're trying to come up with ideas for something slightly different to bring in...so far all we've seen is tons of Timmy's donuts/muffins or cream cheese and bagels...budget is around $20 each, so $40 in total, with enough "treats" for about 30 people...any ideas would be appreciated!

Sometimes COSTCO will surprise you and have some frozen; thaw out dessert items that are excellent. I have baked off some croissants and they have almost been better than ones I have bought.
I bring in Nutella, homemade preserves and jams with still warm croissants and the best quality butter I can find; it is a big hit. This is usually accompanied with a chocoate dipped strawberry topiary I make and it goes. If you are not up to doing a topiary, make a fresh fruit platter with a great fruit dip and you will satisfy the carb, sweet as well as fresh fruit and healthy.

wow, thanks for all the great ideas guys! the cereal bar idea is a really unique one. and will definitely consider some of the others and let you guys know what we end up doing...we're located at york and adelaide, so something close by that can be picked up by 9 would be good...i love stuff by edible arrangements but i think thats a bit pricey for our range...good bagels or sandwiches are something you can never go wrong with though!

The only pastry that hasn't been mentioned that would fit your budget is Chinese pastries -- egg tarts, pineapple buns and bbq pork buns. Not sure if everyone will like them, but they will fit your price range.

Custard tarts from a Portugese Bakery and Cannoli from an Italian Bakery...authentic, no cheating with the supermarket bakery version!

How about the homemade apple cider donuts from the Nathan Phillips Square farmer's market (Wednesdays)?

Things that go over well at my workplace - mini sandwiches on different buns with different fillings, the edible fruit arrangements go fast (the chocolate covered orange slices are amazing), pizza, cheese and crackers, stir-fried noodles.

How about those little tea sandwiches....you know the ones, cut in triangles, no crust...you can get them at Pusateri's in a variety box with egg, salmon, peanut butter. They are addictive and everyone loves them!!!

With that amount of money, you're best to get a couple of bottles of red wine, some orange juice and club soda, then make sangria. That should be enough for 30-odd people.

I would think alcohol in an office might be a problem, esp. since they are just passing probation. Someone earlier suggested samosa's, I like that idea.

Agree on the samosas--also the Brazilian 'doughnuts'--might have to get me some of those this morning.
But bagels and cream cheese done right (not from Timmy's or a supermarket) shouldn't be ruled out. You can raise the bar by getting real bagels from, say Bagel World, Gryfes, Bagel House, etc. according to your personal taste, and real cream cheese (Western), not Philly. Of course, as pinstripeprincess noted, your location my impact on your decision. Congrats, apple pie.

I've done alot of office treats with Edible Arrangements..I'm sure they have a website and deliver all over..They have really adorable looking arrangements of fruit cabobs and chocolate covered strawberrys, etc..

Samosas from Little India are 3 for $1. Tamarind chutney is purchased separately.

where are you located? that might assist with finding something particularly interesting that's local. if you're near dundas west and brock downtown (either live or work) i would suggest dropping into the brazil bakery and grabbing their fresh "donuts" (don't know the brazilian name). they're huge so they could be shared but so amazing when not stale.

light lemon flavour in a fluffy dough with sugar overtop. best donot i've ever had by far.

If you are sticking to a breakfast theme, why not do a cereal bar. Bring milk, soy milk, cereal, bowls, spoons....maybe some raisins.
