There seems to be a number of Yucatecan places around the Bay Area... so I am hoping to satisfy a sudden craving... I am thinking of two particular desserts.

Marquesitas... these are a specialty of Merida... specifically the vendors in the central park adjacent to the Municipal Building where you eat them, while listening to the municipal jarana orchestra (with the 85 year old out of tune trombonist they don't have the heart to kick off). What they are... a kind of an ungodly spawn of a Crepes, Waffle & Cannoli manage a trois. They are a relatively thin pancake, that has waffle markings on it (introducing a crispy texture not found in Crepes)... then they are stuffed with Edam cheese & Cajeta & rolled like a Cannoli... you can either have them fresh from the Marquesita iron.. or have the "older" ones which crisp up more.

Pastel Imposible... basic two layer cake of chocolate cake & flan, you get at the panaderia outlets in the mercado.

Pastel imposible is often called chocoflan, so look for that too on menus.

Thanks... I think that helps because Pastel Imposible sounds like the name a middle class criolle would use... while Chocoflan sounds a lot more like grassroots, rural Yucatecans would use.
