Rt 495 breakfast (Lowell/Lawrence area)

Noank Native Sep 14, 2007 08:27 AM

We've been looking for a good breakfast place on the drive up to Maine (through Massachusetts). We take 495 from the Wocester area through Lowell & Lawrence. Are there any places not too far from the highway that have a good breakfast? Any info would be very welcome!

THANKS to everyone who replied! We're back from Maine--got your replies too late for this trip, but we're ready for the next one!

I second, third and fourth the Owl in Lowell. If you love breakfast and specifially anything with ham like Eggs Bennie - you will be sooo spoiled and prob. wont enjoy an eggs bennie again (unless it's at one their's). It's quite the place, food is awesome, beans, everything, etc. - service staff are great. 244 Appleton Street - just off the Lowel Connector.

Exit 38 (Rte 38) in Tewksbury
About 1 mile South of the highway is Vic's Waffle House on the left.
          Fantastic for breakfast and lunch.
Good, fresh food made from scratch and consistantly good.

I tried it once, but I found it to be sub-par. Owl is *MUCH* better.
Drive the extra few miles and get yerself a good diner meal at the Owl :)

Hidden gem, easy on/off 495 -- Blast from the Past Diner on River St (aka rt 110) in Haverhill.....exit 49/River St exit, bear right off exit, continue straight parallel river for about a mile I guess, it sneaks up on you on the right. Next to Burke's ice cream (really all 1 operation, same family) - - I'm from area & go there almost every week - - try the baby potato pancakes as your potato side. If there near lunch time, try a burger, they're terrific!

I haven't been to Blast from the Past Diner yet but will give them a try.

A couple other suggestions off 495 are:

exit 39 in Tewksbury there is a Cracker Barrel Restaurant if thats your thing.

exit 50 in Haverhill on Rte. 97 toward Salem, about a mile on the right is Cafe 97. Good solid typical local breakfast place.

exit 54 in Amesbury corner of Rte. 100 and 150 is Andyman Dessert & Baking Co. Great local place for excellent coffee selections, espresso, bagels, muffins, pastries, cream cheeses. Not a place for bacon and eggs.

Don't forget Owl Diner in Lowell! :)
I sound like a broken record.

If you've ever been to one of the three diners owned by the same sisters (Owl Diner (Lowell), Dream Diner (Tewksbury), Rosie's (North Chelmsford)), how would you compare Blast from the Past diner to them?

Unfortunately haven't been to any of these diners, but assuming they are great classic diners, you'll find Blast from the Past different - they are a strip mall makeover kind of family run place, lots of 50's memorabilia, etc, great food but not a *classic* diner experience - hope that helps.

Does this place have another name ?
Found Burke's Ice Cream on Google Maps, but no Diner.
Please provide street number and phone.

The Blast from the Past must be fairly new. It's right next door to Burke's Ice Cream on Rte. 110 (River Street) in Haverhill. 978-556-5611.
Look like they have a Local Cruise Night on Sundays through September.
