Has anyone been to either Jilly's Cupcake Bar on Delmar or The Cupcakery in the CWE? What's the skinny?

Yes, my interest is more in taste than appearance, although appearance does make for a pleasant experience!

I have to say that I've really enjoyed the cupcakes at Jilly's. They're well done and have some very interesting combinations, but nothing too funky. I was in town for a float trip recently (transplanted to Scrapple-ville) and stopped in with my sis for breakfast. We split a Ham & Gruyere Strata and a PB&Jilly and it was a great meal. The strata was de-lovin-licious and the cupcake (mind you, not a huge PB&J fan) was really tasty. You tend to get a lot of cupcake for one meal, so splitting it works. I did have the Carrot Cake one on another trip home (just after they opened up) and the cake was tasty, but I like more substance to my cream cheese icing.
By all means, stop by and try one of them... or a few.

          fun you mention substance.

I stopped by at lunch Friday and posted my thoughts on my blog. I too mentioned the cream cheese on the carrot cake being to whipped and lacking the creaminess that carrot cake aficionados adore. You can see it via the link in my profile.

Been to Jillys. It is the best of the two. I really like the plain vanilla, and the chocolate thunder.

I actually felt more strongly about The Cupcakery, and posted about it today on my blog.

I've only been to Jilly's. Caveat- I only went there for cupcakes. I bought several kinds for a birthday party that we all shared. Was really dissapointed that they were out of Chocolate Thunder by 12:30 in the afternoon?? Cupakes are beautiful and all of them were perfectly moist and crumbly cake. Flavor really depends on the cupcake and we found some to really be lacking (i.e. no real punch in the cupcake or frosting that defined it well). The PB&J was probably the best and truly tasted of both. Bee Sting and Carrot Cake were biggest disappointments. Vanilla! was quite good and I rather liked the Tiramisu (I don't see it listed on the website) but again thought it could have had more flavor punch. I'll probably try them again as they work out the kinks.

I have been to both places and the Cupcakery is by FAR the better of the two. The cake and icing at the cupcakery is DELICIOUS. The cakes may look fancier at Jilly's, but they taste worse - Jilly's icing is especially worse than Cupcakery's buttercream, which is fantastic. We even had an office taste test and the Cupcakery won hands down - I don't think anyone preferred Jilly's that day. I've even been to Jilly's and was given a burnt cupcake - nasty.

I had lunch at Jilly's a few weeks back and it was okay. I In terms of lunch items, it wasn't anything you couldn't get at any number of other ladies lunch type places. I am not really a sweets eater and therefore found the cupcakes overwhelming. My three year old has a sweet tooth approximately the size of Manhattan and even between the two of us, we couldn't manage to finish one of the cupcakes.

I've only tried the Cupcakery, and as an avid cupcake baker I was underwhelmed. Their buttercream was FAR too sweet for my liking.

Haven't tried Cupcakery but have been wanting to do so. Jilly's atmosphere is nice and coffee is good but the frosting is not buttercreamesque. I do like Pastries of Denmark in Creve Coeur. They have a buttercream frosting and fillings too. Delicious.
