Assuming the weather's nice and your date is fairly casual, I'd say Gascogne. The garden in the back is absolutely gorgeous - romantic in a low-key, no pressure kind of way. Plus most people like French food, so you shouldn't come across any difficulties with the menu (worst case scenario, there's good bread and cheese).

you could try provence on macdougal..it was taken over by the cookshop and five points crew. it is not over the top good, but nice place for a date
