Pizza Suggestions needed for SD - Near 15 and Poway

I will be visiting San Diego this weekend and am hoping to find a local pizza place near where I'm staying (I-15 and Poway Road). I'm dreaming of New York style pizza. I've searched the board and haven't found anything thus far. It seems Filippi's Pizza Grotto is suggested for the meat ball sub, but not the pizza. I appreciate any ideas!

Also, any other restaurant suggestions for that area would be much welcomed!

  1. A couple of miles west on the 56 (one exit north on the 15 from Poway Rd) there's Mario's New York Pizzeria:

I stopped by once and it was decent. I had a slice of margherita and a slice of some meat-combo. The margherita was unremarkable but the combo slice was tasty. It's nothing special, but I think it's at least on par or better than Fillipi's.

One other is New York Giant Pizza: It's on Rancho Penasquitos Blvd...basically what Poway Rd turns into when you keep heading west past the 15. It's in the area with the McDonald's. I had it once also and it wasn't that great. I'd probably recommend Mario's out of the two.

I think you might be a little limited in the area in terms of New York style, as you'd have to drive on the 15 about 15 minutes to get a decent New York style slice. Just off the top of my head for other suggestions, there's also Oggi's which is immediately just off the 56 eastbound, and I believe you can take a road parallel to the 15 from Poway Rd to get there. Two exits north on Carmel Mountain Rd. eastbound there's Leucadia Pizzeria and California Pizza Kitchen. And finally, one exit south of Poway Rd on the 15 at Scripps Poway Parkway eastbound is Sammy's Woodfire Pizza. None of these are anything special which is why I'll usually make a drive when I'm in the mood for pizza.

    1. Are you staying at the La Quinta? Do you have a car?

Filippi's pizza is okay, but if you go I recommend getting extra cheese. If you drive along Poway Road going east (from I-15), the first light will be Sabre Springs Pkwy. Turn Left. Drive north and you will pass under Ted Williams Pkwy and on the right will be Oggi's Pizza. I prefer their pizza to Filippi's and they have some decent beers.

If you keep driving north, you'll come to Carmel Mtn Rd and there is a CPK (go straight, probably not what you're looking for) and Leucadia Pizza (turn right, not sure if they're NY-style, but they're okay).

If you are staying at the La Quinta, my favorite sushi place is right in front - Sushi USA.

I will have a car, so these all look great. I'm not staying at the La Quinta, but I do love sushi and will be nearby. Thanks for the great tips everyone!

      2. Try Bongiorno's on Poway Road. NY style, pretty good last time I tried it, but not as good as say Bronx or Luigi's. Has been posted on the board a number of times

Nice. I'll have to try that out.

Is that the one next Patrick's pub? The last time I was there I saw a pizza comnig out that was so large, I don't think it would have fit in my car. It certainly smelled good, though.

I think we'll hit that one up! Thanks.

                Report on Bongiorno's:

Great recommendation! We had the meat lover's with jalapenos added and it was delicious. The meats were sausage, bacon, pepperoni and mini meatballs. Each meat was very tasty, but I favored the mini meatballs. The crust came out crisp but still slightly chewey. Perfect NY style. My boyfriend ordered the supreme (typical veggie and meat type mix) after I left town and said it was excellent, though he preferred the meat lovers.

We also ordered a salad, which was good - romaine and iceberg lettuce, black olives, tomatoes, bell peppers.

Bongiorno's is a little hard to find, especially in the dark. It is about three shops down from the Irish pub on the corner. The sign doesn't light up at night, so you have to look closely. I highly recommend Bongiorno's to anyone. Thanks for the recommendation.

            2. My Dad, who lives in Scripps Ranch, reports that one of the guys who worked at Bronx Pizza is opening a place in Poway. . .honestly, I don't know where.

Frankie's Italian Deli, on Mira Mesa Blvd (southeast corner of Mira Mesa Blvd and Black Mountain Road), serves up a decent pie, though the service can be a bit spacy at times. Its a real family place, and to go there you get to know Jerry and Gabrielle and the lot (including their dogs and kids).

That rumor has been going around for at least 2 years. There was some speculation that Bongiorno's was that place, but then that was refuted. Alas, I moved out of the area before anything happened.

I'm not surprised. There was a guy named Dennis who ran a great pizzeria in Poway (on Poway Road, the northwest side of Poway Rd and Community), then moved to the strip mall across Friars from Hazard Center, and then started working for Bronx Pizza. I think Powayans have been dreaming of good pizza ever since.

As for Frankie's, I got my directions messed up, its on the southwest corner. Sorry.
