hi there:

family will be making a weekend trek to SD, will be staying near the symphony hall in Downtown SD, would like to know if there's any kid friendly (oldest is 2 yr old) within walking distance.

also, we love hole in the wall and ethnic food (since we are from SGV); we have car and willing to drive. We'll be around balboa park 1 day so any neighborhoods to eat around the park?

daughter loves noodles,

all recs and advise welcome.

Jeff

For hole-in-the-wall ethnic stuff near the park, I strongly suggest Mama's Lebanese Bakery and Deli. It's on Alabama St., just south of El Cajon Blvd. Outstanding middle eastern food. The make bread to order for the sandwiches.

It's not unusual for me to agree with Josh, and the Mama's rec is no exception. Another- more fine dining- is Cafe Chloe, who welcomes kids. Ask to see the toy box. Cafe Chloe is on G Street at 9th.

Mama Testa's in Hillcrest has good tacos and salsa bar. Casual, definitely kid-friendly. A close drive from Balboa Park.

For Asian noodles, there are several offerings along Convoy Ave, about 10 min north of downtown. Chopstix for udon, katsu bowls. Tajima for ramen. Izakaya Sakura has udon, soba, sushi and izakaya style food (excellent sushi and menu). Dumpling Inn has Northern Chinese soup noodles but I've found their broth a tad watered down for me. Pho T Cali on Clairemont Drive for pho. However, given that you are from SGV, your Asian food offerings are generally better than down here.

Kid friendly in Downtown. . .hmm. . .its not the greatest ever, but Mama Gucci's on 6th, between B and C is a pretty good pasta place. Um. . .La Gran Tapa is on 6th and B, and there's a Thai Place (I forget the name) on Seventh between B and C. . .that's all I can think of for now.
