recs for Hwy 421 Boone - Winston?

AreBe Sep 13, 2007 08:50 AM

Visiting Boone and Appalachian State U. Open House this Saturday with the elder chowpup. Will have campus grub for a light lunch, then head thru Winston as we return to the Triangle. What's good on or within 5 miles or so of Hwy 421? Not looking for fine dining, just a place to sit and rest and refuel our sweaty, tired, casually dressed bodies.

I was in Boone this past weekend and I had great Mexican food at a restaurant named Los Arcoiris in a shopping center off Hwy 321/221.

I'm an App alumna and made the haul from Boone to the Triangle many times, though I rarely ate along the way. One fondly bad experience was at the Chinese restaurant next to the Texaco along Wilkesboro's 421 drag. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Hope you have a great time, and if you scrap plans for a "light" lunch, stop by Dan'l Boone Inn and stuff yourself silly on fried chicken.

Sounds like Dan Akroyd in the Saturday Night Live Chinese Theater sketches, "Bad. Bad. Exquisitely bad."

Thanks for the tips. If he does go to App I'll be one of Dan'l Boone's best customers.

In Lewisville, there's a good Italian restaurant called Cicciones. It's only a couple of miles from 421, right off of Shallowford Rd in the Lowe's Foods shopping center. It's casual and family-oriented.
