Non-touristy restaurants (suggestions for NY-er)
I'm visiting SF next week and need recommendations for restaurants. I've already booked A16 and Slanted Door, and I've been to Iluna Basque, Oona (sp?), and Restaurant Lulu on a previous visit.
I'm particularly interested in places in the Mission and where to go for Chinese (close to Nob Hill or Union Square). I'm also looking for places that are affordable (entrees under $25), and something I wouldn't necessarily find in a travel guide.
My boyfriend and I live in Manhattan, but we're really excited to go to SF because we hear it's a foodie city that rivals our own! Thanks in advance --
I **LOVE** the two restaurants you have booked and they would be the first two I would tell you to go to!!!
That said, in the Mission you shoudl check out Range.
It is San Francisco, you'll find everything in a travel guide ;)
I don't know how long you are in town for, but I always tell people coming in for a longer stay to try out L'Osteria del Forno in North Beach. They don't take reservations, but it is rather cheap and the food is genuinely excellent. A glorified pizza place. But, the pizza to order is the porcini. (That basically sums it up -- a pizza joint where the most popular pizza is the porcini pizza.) 95% of the time they have a pork roast which is excellent.
I would also seriously consider Fringale in SoMa. I've had so many great meals there. And it really is very well priced.
Robert and whiner, thanks. This board can be overwhelming if you don't search for a specific restaurant name!
I would recomend La Ciccia and Delfina as my Mission destinations. Defina is a bit larger and well-known, but I really like both places. You can find discussions on both via search.
