What's the best grilled cheese?

ychasin Sep 11, 2007 10:53 AM

We can count panini, but its best if you order an item called 'grilled cheese'.

The Original New York Milkshake Company on St. Marks has a really good, no frills, grilled cheese just like mom made them. I used to eat them almost everyday on the way to work.

You are so right Foie! In fact that was the first place that came to mind when I saw this thread. too bad it is closed! We need a place like that in EV.

Yeah my daughter (and I) are still mourning the demise of NY Milkshake Co. Their shakes and free pretzels were nice too. (BAMN is in the space now and though I like the automat concept the food sucks) . I agree that Say Cheese mentioned above is good and after taking her there I'm happy to report my daughter forsook Kraft American cheese forever in favor of gruyere on her grilled cheese. The fontina and black trumpet mushroom with truffle oil at 'Wichcraft is a great adult grilled cheese and is Mrs. GG's favorite (besides the gorgonzola, bacon and frisee which is their best sandwich).

Big Daddy's Diner on Park Ave South has a great grilled cheese with cheddar and jalapeno jack on marble rye. And you can get tater tots with it!

"Say Cheese" is a small casual restaurant in Hell's Kitchen that specializes in grilled cheese.

          649 9th Ave, New York 10036
          Btwn 45th & 46th St

I especially like the "Florentine," which includes sauteed spinach and mushrooms with Jack cheese on olive bread from Amy's Bread. They also have the best tomato-cheddar soup in town.

I agree with ESNY - the grilled cheese sandwiches at 'wichcraft are delicious. There are two, neither of which may qualify as standard grilled cheese, but their main ingredient is cheese, and both are soooooooo good:

grilled fontina with black trumpet mushrooms & white truffle fondue on pullman white bread

grilled gruyère and caramelized onions on rye bread

I miss all the good food in NYC!

Chat N Chew on 16th between 5th ave and Union Sq West. Comes with cheddar, american and swiss and you can add on ham or bacon and tomato. The bread is perfectly grilled everytime (I go there fairly often) and comes with some great fries.

                Best I've ever had.

Hands down the grilled cheese at Green Table in Chelsea Market. Sharp, melty cheddar cheese + fragrant, fresh, thick-sliced multi grain bread + fresh, sweet butter, served with microgreens.

The grilled cheese at 'wichcraft. Gruyere and carmelized onions on rye (i think).

Third this! Though it is really not the classic combination.

I like that one too. Also the grilled cheddar with smoked country ham is really great. It comes with pear or quince, depending what's in season.

One I want to make is Suzanne Goin's grilled cantal with caramelized onion and thyme. She serves that at Lucques in L.A.

im a fan of the 3 cheese with truffle oil panini at 'ino...though i usually get it as part of my quattro panini...very rich.

also, the grilled cheese at chat and chew rules...is that place still in business?

                          1. LeahBaila Sep 11, 2007 11:13 AM

Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop or Burger Heaven...both serve up the "classic" with white bread and American cheese.
