Bread!

After a year-long sojourn out-of-state, I have recent;y returned to Orange County to find that my favorite bakery, The Village Bakery in Costa Mesa, is gone. Can anyone recommend a good surrogate? Somewhere I can get good Franco- or Italianate bread? Baguettes, brioche, sourdough, whatever? I've been subsisting on La Brea Bakery stuff I can find various places, but wondering if there is a local, OC, answer.

I Love in Costa Mesa, so the nearer to CM/Newport, the better.

  1. If you looking for great bread, like Acme, you will not find it in OC. I have tried many places and none were great. You can buy decent bread at the new Wholefoods. I usually stock up when I go to bread bar in LA.

BreadBar now has two locations per their website, none in OC:

Boudin has three local outlets near you, the one in Irvine at 2803 Main (at Jamboree) I didn't find in Google yet.

For simple, crusty, cheap, and WARM FRESH French style baguettes head to the nearest Lee's Sandwich.

        Almost forgot:

Globe Delicatessen has a good selection of German style bread.

Mahlers (wholesale) makes a full line of German breads and is available up here at Torrance Alpine Village; perhaps Globe carries them. Sourdough rye, mmmmmm.

    2. Cream Pan in Tustin has excellent French and Italian bread. Don't get there before 10 though as they won't be out of the oven (that's the only annoying thing).

      1. Lee's Sandwiches or Banh Mi Che Cali. 50 cent baguettes that knock the socks off of 2.50 Breadbar baguettes.
