Cheap NYC Landmarks/Staples?

I have recently heard that Katz's Deli is going to be closing sometime in the future. So I have decided that I want to make sure I hit most of NYC's remaing staples before they are all gone. I have had:

Ray's Pizza
Grimaldi's Pizza
Grey's Papaya
2nd Ave Deli (sad to see it go)
Ess-A Bagel (on 21st and 1st)

I am sure there are tons more. Throw out your favorites if you don't mind. Thanks.

  1. Sure hope that doesn't happen, it would be a sad day indeed. Where did you hear this?

A few different friends said that it was going to get run out in all the LES new developments. I hope they are wrong as well.

    2. Katz's Deli is one of my favorite places on earth, but $14 for a pastrami sandwich I would not call cheap. However, you do get what you pay for. Grey's Papaya recently went up to a buck and a quarter a dog in my neighborhood, which I feel may put it at the tipping point, but still a deal. Plus, they have doormen.

Wouldn't worry too much about it. Katz's does a very good business as it is right now and the LES developers won't get rid of it until they have completely taken over the neighborhood which hasn't happened yet (though the Ludlow is an abomination). I'd give it at least another 3-5 years before it's in jeopardy.
