Charlotte Observer restaurant reviews [Moved from South board]

I used to always look forward to Friday's E & T section to read Helen Schwab's latest review. It seems that lately if there is a review it's just filler. There are restaurants opening almost daily it seems and today's paper had a "review"(using the term loosely) of a fast food joint called Cook Out. And lately I've noticed that they are re-printing articles in Friday's E & T section that they had previously run in Thursday's Southern Mecklenburg Neighbors . What's up with that?

Lately, all I've enjoyed is Wednesday's food section. I'm a huge fan of our food editor, Kathleen Purvis, and always looked forward to her pieces... but what's up with Helen?

  1. Most food reviews give you an "idea" or snapshot in time of a restaurant. After a few years in the Charlotte area, I find little resemblance between the Schwab review and my experience at the restaurant. I always ask myself, "Is the same restaurant that was reviewed"? Just my take.

Check out the food reviews of Tricia Childress in Creative Loafing - she really does a thoughtful and meaningful review.

I couldn't agree more with both of these posts. It's really a bummer. I thought maybe she was on vacation but it's been a long time since I've seen a review that I agreed with. Three of my friends and I have a monthly restaurant "date" and we used to make a habit of going to a restaurant that she had reviewed. But unfortunately after a few misses, we just stopped. I really hate it because she was spot on for a long time.

And I love the fact that Kathleen Purvis reads Chowhound! She's a local treasure!

Thanks, I'm glad to know it's not just me. I, too, thought she was on vaction for awhile, but it's been a long stretch now. Of couse last week she did Old Fort Pub in Hilton Head and some diner down there. I think Charlotte restaurants have been neglected. You're right about Kathleen Purvis... she is a treasure!

Thanks for sending me to check out Creative Loafing. We are heading to Charlotte next month for a week long bridge tournament at the Hilton-University and looking for casual vegetarian friendly dining. I was able to print out CL top picks for vegetarian, vegan and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in the Charlotte area.

Another Friday Charlotte Observer, another week without a restaurant review. I don't get it. I am seriously thinking of just getting a weekend subscription. Am I missing something?

I hear ya. What the hell is going on? Hey, by the way, any idea what restaurant Kathleen Purvis was writing about in Wed.'s food section where she described a horribly snobby server? Some place on Providence Rd. I'm dying to know!

Helen did a real review today although I will not be rushing over there any time soon. Sounds like Pewter Rose II. I'm just glad she's doing reviews again. I would LOVE to know which restaurant Kathleen was at. I was thinking Providence Bistro?
