We finally made it to Cafe Maude this last wednesday night. We had tried to go for brunch the previous weekend, but arrived to find that contrary to their ads, they were not open for brunch yet. Instead we went to Salut and had an excellent brunch. But that has nothing to do with our meal at Maude.

First off, 8pm on wednesday night and the place was packed. We lucked out and were able to get the only open 2 top in the place. It was very lively, but the noise level was just fine. Could easily talk to each other without having to raise our voices. Nice looking room as well. They have a stage in the corner where they have music a few nights week. If i were them i would tear it out and put in 3 more tables (which they could easily fill).

Started off with a cocktail. i had the "This Charming Man" which was named after a Smith's song, so i was into it. Plus it was made with Gin and Cava. Also sold. Though it was supposed to come with an english cigarette, which our waiter failed to bring. More on our waiter later. My SO had a blackberry mojito that was delicious.

To start with we split the rice croquettes. they were alright...kind of lacking. But the chorizo hash with grilled baby octopus was fantastic. great flavor and the octopus was so tender. great.

We also split the burger and the frisee flatbread. the burger was cooked perfectly with this great crust on it. the flatbread had great flavor with bits of duck, blue cheese and balsamic with frisee on top. Had a nice bottle of wine with it as well.

So our server was actually the only low point of the meal. He seemed very new, did not really sell us on anything. Asked us if we wanted the wine to breathe before pouring it, it was not a wine that needed to "breathe". Left us alone for far too long when we wanted to order. And only stayed to talk about our up coming trip to Spain when he brought us our entrees, thus leaving us to talk to him while our food was cooling down. He did though have one of the other servers who lived in Barcelona come over and talk to us. So he did mean well, but just wasnt there as far as the service was concerned.

I do really want to go back for brunch just to have the Bloody Homer. Check it out on their brunch drink menu.

Thank you for this report. Cafe Maude sounds promising, indeed. Hopefully, the services polishes up a bit!

I really think it was just our server. Looking across the room every other server looked to be on their game and made us jealous of the other customers. I think we just got the one bad one.
