Need good salad around 33rd + 8th!

I live right by Madison Square Garden, which is THE worst food neighborhood in NYC!

Everything's aimed at tourists, drunks and commuters: Micky D's, TGI Friday, pubs, etc.

There must be somewhere nearby where I can get a good salad (aside from Wholefoods on 27th + 7th) – one that isn't comprised of iceburg lettuce, flavorless tomatoes and goopy ranch dressing.

In fact, ANY decent food reccos nearby would be appreciated (Market Cafe aside).

Any suggestions?

Isn't there a Hale & Hearty Soups around there? Good soups and salads, especially for takeout (their "ambience" for eating in leaves something to be desired).

Have you tried Just Salads on 37th between 7th and B'way? I work near the one on Park Avenue and it is always fresh and terrific (and has a long line out the door at noon showing that others agree). They have a ton of ingredient choices and make their own dressings, so boredom isn't a factor if you go a lot (I do). They have a lot of heart-healthy dressings like creamy avocado. Go and enjoy. http://www.justsalad.com/
