Searching for Augustiner-Bräu in San Francisco

Has anyone seen this beer in the Bay Area? Augustiner is a brewery in Munich that doesn't export very many places. I would love to know if it's available somewhere around here. I have already checked with BevMo and haven't been able to find it. Thanks for your help.

  1. You might call Schroeder's and Suppenkuche.

    1. Just to update anyone who might be interested, I wasn't able to find Augustiner, but through my search I was exposed to Healthy Spirits, a great liquor store in the Castro which stocks a wide array of hard to find European imports. Just FYI.

+1 for Healthy Spirits in the Castro north of Market. It is my favorite place to buy beer when I am in SF.

      2. I have been to Oktoberfest in Munich and Augustiner is one of my favorite brews. I think, however, you will find that it is not imported in to this country. I don't know if that's based on a lack of supply or other reasons. The last time in Munich in 1996 we were staying at the Ambassador In a town called Harras and I went to a liquor store to find some beer. I discovered that they make an exceptionally strong brew for the fest season.

        1. Just did a quick Google search and there is nothing to indicate it can be found in the US of A. If you find it though let us know. I want to be one of the first in line. Second choice for me is Spaten.

          1. I had it at House of Prime Rib recently, if I recall correctly.

            1. check with the dood at CITY BEER:
              http://www.citybeerstore.com/beer-sto...

              1. i haven't been to suppenkuche recently, but they used to carry a bottled augustiner
quite frequently on special. a look at their website augustinerbraeu.de indicates that their edel-stoff beer is an export beer, and that's the one they carried at suppenkuche. it tasted very much like their helles beer, which i began drinking in earnest in munich when i was....young. in the US i've come across it in one liquor store in the chevy chase neighborhood in DC, once ( i think) at central market in austin, at suppenkuche, and a restaurant in DC. it is not easy to find. call suppenkuche.

and if that fails, i found this company in pennsylvania, mellingersbeer.com

i remembered there being a company in PA that imported augustiner, when i read the labels of a rare find years ago. this might be it. there doesn't seem to be any info on ordering or shipping, but give them a call.

by the way, my use of "augustiner" as a...what do we call this these days...my chowhound name...is only distantly related to my affection for that particular brewery. i am so far removed from being a real beer enthusiast. but i have very strong nostalgic attachments to their beer, so if you are successful in finding a local source, please report back.

OK my website links didn't work out. speaking of beer, i've had quite a few tonight. but, just search for augustiner and mellingers and you'll find them.

                  1. re: augustiner

I too have fond memories of Augustiner. The Augustiner beer garden in Munich on a sunny afternoon is quite possibly the most relaxing place in the world. I'm looking for the beer to try to replicate that feeling and celebrate Oktoberfest. I'll let you know if I find it.

The back yard of the Lanesplitter on San Pablo in Berkeley is nice on a sunny afternoon.

So are the upstairs deck at Triple Rock and the patio at Pyramid, but the beer's not as good.

                  2. You might call The Junket in El Cerrito. If he doens't carry it, the owner might be able to tell you if anyone does.

                    1. Speisekammer in Alameda has Augustiner München Münchener Bier on their beer list:

                      1. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have found Augustiner available in two locations in San Francsico: Suppenkuche and City Beer. I haven't been to City Beer yet, but it is a hybrid beer store/tasting bar. Augustiner is available for $3.29 a bottle. Here is the link to City Beer.

After having been told that it was not available in the United States this is exciting news even though I live in Los Angeles. I think I will run a reciprocal post on the Los angeles board because I truly miss that wonderful brew.

                          1. re: sheriff

glad CITY BEER worked out for you.
i know you put SF in you headline but people talking about
east bay options might look into Ledgers
                            on university ave in berkeley:
                            http://www.ledgersliquors.com/

                            ok tnx.

                            1. re: psb

I came here to suggest Ledgers but I see that's been done. I'm almost certain they had Maximator in stock when I was there a month or three back (somewhat out of season, but hey). I'll try to remember to check in the near future.

                            2. re: sheriff

I have an email communication going on with City Beer. They say they ship beer all over. I'm working at getting them to ship me two six packs of Augustiner, which they do have, to me in SFV. I'll keep you posted

                            3. Hey there, I see most of the posts here are kind of old. However, I live in Orange County and Hollingshead's Deli in Orange imports this beer. Apparently there are only two importers in the US. I know they received a shipment within the last few weeks as I had ordered a couple of cases. Since you're in LA this might be a good place to checkout. I've attached a link, although they don't sell online. Good Luck!
