Gambardella's, Trattoria Buon Gusto or Palermo?

We have friends visiting from out of town next Friday. Normally we would cook, but they arrive on a Friday and we won't have time. In lieu of having dinner at home, we are seeking a warm, friendly, homey environment with great food that isn't too expensive. One friend is a vegetarian.

I have been to all 3 of these places in years past.
Buon Gusto has always been a good neighborhood spot -- I heard that they may be closing -- is this true?

All things equal, where should we go?

  1. I can't remember where I read it but Buon Gusto apparently closed in early August - from what I read, there are new owners and it will eventually reopen.

What sad news - Buon Gusto had been there for ten years and was eye-opening good, simple Italian food. Anyone know why they shuttered it?

    2. I always preferred Buon Gusto for Italian in Menlo Park (sorry, haven't been to Palermo). If you want to stay in town, my other recommendation would be Angelo Mio. However, because you said your friend is a vegetarian, I highly recommend Sultana for their awesome "combo" appetizer (of course I love their other foods as well).

      1. My kids are big fans of Palermo, we go there all the time and the owners are super nice. I would say the atmosphere at Gambardella's is a little more adult than Palermo (and the inside seating more spacious), but both have very good food. I find Palermo a tad pricier than Gambardella's though.

        1. You might check out Carpaccio as well. Prices are about the same as Gambardella's and I recall having a delightful wild mushroom risotto so they can do some vegetarian.
