Looking for a Recipe from Childhood Memories - Butterfly Buns [Moved from Ontario Board]

Medira Sep 4, 2007 12:47 PM

When I was growing up, my family and I would spend weekends up at the cottage my grandfather built just outside of Haliburton. The drive up there would take us through the town of Fenelon Falls, where we would usually stop for a little while. Part of the traditional stop in Fenelon was at the little bakery in town, where we would buy half a dozen butterfly buns. They were like cinammon buns, but lighter on the cinammon flavour than most cinammon buns that I find these days, with raisins throughout the dough. The best part though, was the dollop of raspberry jam that was spread in an indentation in the top and the drizzle of icing that was poured over the whole bun. Back when I was in my mid-teens though (which was longer ago than I care to admit) the bakery closed and we haven't been able to find them anywhere since.

I've tried modifying cinnamon bun recipes without finding the "right" taste, so I'm wondering if anybody around here has heard of anything similar, or if anybody has come across a recipe that sounds like what I'm looking for.

Sounds like Hot Cross Buns. Here's one (untried) version:

Not quite what I'm looking for. They closely resemble cinnamon buns. I do have a great hot cross bun recipe that my grandmother used to make, though. ;-)

As soon as I find it, certainly. I haven't been too lucky yet though.
