Hard Shell Taco Recs?

As much as I love my cochinita pibil at Yuca's and my pastor at El Gran Burrito, I have been hankering for a good old school hard shell taco lately. Perhaps it is the sweet regressive thoughts of greasy taco night at Grandma's when I was a kid (maybe that's why I unashamedly fall through Del Taco drive through for tacos -- memories of Naugles - sigh). I really like the little fried beef and pickle tacos as Malo, but looking for something more low down, accessible, and down to earth.

Thanks, folks.

Of course! When I lived on the westside, I went there at least once a week. I live in East WeHo now, so also looking for Hollywood/Eastside treats. Sorry. Should have been more geographically specific. Tito's does hit the spot though, big time.

Ttito's Tacos might be what you're looking for.

        Titos on Washington Pl
        Mexicantessen on Atlantic
        Pepes on Valley Blvd
Ordoneze on Garfield across from J&S both 24 hrs
        Tacos Lita

Check the thread a few days ago for ground beef burritos, should have tacos also.

Pacos Tacos on Centinela has pretty good hard shell tacos.

I've also tried Tia Juana based on good reports about their hard shell tacos. Didn't find them that great though, although they're certainly not worse than Titos.

I'm gonna throw this out there, and I'll probably get clobbered: Malo also has tacos dorados. Not groundbreaking, but at their happy hour (which really is the only time I'd go), the crunchy ground beef-and-pickle ones especially, with lots of yellow cheese, sure do hit the spot in between the margaritas.

If you're in SGV, try Pepe's (locations in Rosemead and Alhambra).

Good ol greasy hard tacos with shells that don't come out of a box.

Definitely Tito's. Also, I LOVE the hard shell tacos at Taco Treat in Arcadia. That salsa... MMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Not to mention the deep fried burritos.

Okay I know this will get slammed too, but I like the Chipotle (chain) hard tacos. They put a lot of good stuff in the veggie version too.

recently, instead of getting the tacos, I get a burrito bol + chips to make a really gangster order of nachos.

Yum! I hope you don't get slammed, because those really hit the spot sometimes. Another favorite crispy taco of mine is the taco dorado at My Taco in Highland Park.

Yes, agree on My Taco in Highland Park. I am mostly vegetarian, so I usually get the potato taco dorado and it comes with a generous amount of guacamole, too.

Hugo's Taqueria on Coldwater Canyon at Riverside in the SFV has good hard tacos, too, with a variety of fillings to choose from. Just had them today, as a matter of fact! Soy chorizo / zucchini / potato with salsa negra (but they have meat and fish options, too).

The taco stand next to the carwash at Hollywood and Vermont has very good shredded beef hard shell tacos. I think they are actually on the corner of Prospect and Vermont.

In the Silver Lake area, I like the hard shell tacos from Rick's, on Fletcher and Riverside.

I also like the hard shell tacos from Lucy's El Adobe, on Melrose near Paramount Studios.

Yes, DanaB, that taco from RICK"S is GREAT!..has become my favorite "day after the night before" food remedy when I don't want Tommy's chili cheese fries.
They make them fresh, to order, the shell if fried when they make your taco-it's not some gross pre-made shell that you'll find at other places...
I was not thrilled with the tacos at Henry's on Riverside. I really wanted to like them but the shell was odd and the sauce tasted like Ragu spagetti sauce with tabasco put in it...not my cup o tea.

I had the potato tacos at My Taco in Highland Park the other night--amazing! Lettuce, cheese, lots of guacamole and wonderful potatoes inside of a crispy shell. When you want soft tacos those are great there too!

                                    Not a fan of Henry's.
I really wanted to like 'em cuz the place is so cute.
                                    Shells were gross.
Sauce was like spagetti sauce with tabasco
Go to RICKS on Fletcher and Riverside...mmm, good hard taco.
