Hard Shell Taco Recs?
As much as I love my cochinita pibil at Yuca's and my pastor at El Gran Burrito, I have been hankering for a good old school hard shell taco lately. Perhaps it is the sweet regressive thoughts of greasy taco night at Grandma's when I was a kid (maybe that's why I unashamedly fall through Del Taco drive through for tacos -- memories of Naugles - sigh). I really like the little fried beef and pickle tacos as Malo, but looking for something more low down, accessible, and down to earth.
Thanks, folks.

re: DanaB
Yes, DanaB, that taco from RICK"S is GREAT!..has become my favorite "day after the night before" food remedy when I don't want Tommy's chili cheese fries.
They make them fresh, to order, the shell if fried when they make your taco-it's not some gross pre-made shell that you'll find at other places...
I was not thrilled with the tacos at Henry's on Riverside. I really wanted to like them but the shell was odd and the sauce tasted like Ragu spagetti sauce with tabasco put in it...not my cup o tea.

Okay I know this will get slammed too, but I like the Chipotle (chain) hard tacos. They put a lot of good stuff in the veggie version too.

re: garvanza girl
Yes, agree on My Taco in Highland Park. I am mostly vegetarian, so I usually get the potato taco dorado and it comes with a generous amount of guacamole, too.
Hugo's Taqueria on Coldwater Canyon at Riverside in the SFV has good hard tacos, too, with a variety of fillings to choose from. Just had them today, as a matter of fact! Soy chorizo / zucchini / potato with salsa negra (but they have meat and fish options, too).

I'm gonna throw this out there, and I'll probably get clobbered: Malo also has tacos dorados. Not groundbreaking, but at their happy hour (which really is the only time I'd go), the crunchy ground beef-and-pickle ones especially, with lots of yellow cheese, sure do hit the spot in between the margaritas.
