24-hour food in MSP?

Does anyone have suggestions for the best 24-hour food in the Minneapolis-St Paul area? This could be diners, bakeries, street food, even sno-cones -- as long as they're serving til the break of dawn, I'm interested. The wackier, the better. Thoughts?

  1. Sadly, "best" and "open 24 hours" don't normally occur in the same sentence.

The usual all-night options are Mickey's Diner, the Flameburger, White Castle, and Perkins. I would eat White Castles only if I were drunk, and I would avoid Perkins under any circumstance.

If I were looking for food at 3 in the morning, I'd probably scrounge for deli food at a Byerly's/Lunds or other 24-hour grocery store.

i think flameburger is another "drunk" thing.

Mmmmm, White Castle. My favorite. We recently had a cab driver bring us through the drive through. Added $10 to our cab, but worth every penny.

      2. Not quite 24-hr, but close: 6 a.m. to 4 a.m. : Hard Times cafe on the West Bank/Cedar/Riverside. Vegetarian and, well, if you want wacky, it can be. Good food and good folks within those parameters. I don't know if this is an endorsement, but my college aged son and a lot of his friends with odd schedules eat there at odd times. We have too.

I'll try again to add the place; didn't work initally. Hope this one works. If not it's on Riverside, just a half block or so east of Cedar.

hard times is a great rec-- it is currently closed for about a month for remodeling. it was my fave underage hangout as well. good veg/vegan/punk rock eats. good milkshakes! strong coffee. like the govt center, it seems everyone in town goes through there eventually. popular w students, cabbies, chess masters, revolutionaries, etc. sometimes you can't get food because the cook is feeling cranky. but the food is good imo.

You know I've eaten there twice..relatively late hours, didn't really like what I had... I think maybe it was the salad dressing that turned me off, not sure. What is your favorite thing at Hard Times Cafe?

            1. re: bijougem

Because it is my wont, I go for breakfasty sorts of things. You know, eggs and fried potatoes, embellished in your own way. Be aware of soupkitten's post about the cook being cranky at times (above).

I have to ask this: (tongue in cheek) if you're eating at late hours at the Hard Times, why are you having salad? <grin>

              1. re: cayjohan

haha good point :) I'm not exactly sure, but salad is good. I think I had a sandwich too... I don't remember. I think I had soup...maybe the soup wasn't too great. :? I'll have to try again. Both times I ordered the headache tea so maybe that's why. :-D I didn't like the guys in the front of the place harrassing me && staring through the window, but that's not their fault...

            1. this option is only slightly better than the fast food joints....
but Uptown Diner on Hennepin is great if you're craving breakfast in the middle of the night.

I think that the Uptown is open 24 hours only from Thursday to Sunday.

you're right - the uptown diner is only 24 hrs thurs til sun but it's great food for late-late-late nite dining! i love checking out the ppl who go there -- it's a great mix of folks and the waitstaff are quite friendly.

another place that isn't 24 hrs but open til 3am is little tijuana. i love the fact that you can color on their tables. :)

Pizza Luce in the warehouse district likewise is open till 3 or 4 in the morning - most of the tatooed and pierced waitstaff from the other w'house district bars go there after hours.

                    1. re: Loren3

yuk i used to work there back when the food was okay. it has gone seriously downhill and the toppings that used to be unusual are not so much anymore. some menu items and their basic pizza will always please at bar close, though. i have a soft spot for their mashed potato-feta pizza, which i haven't had in years-- wonder if it's still any good? is it still packed at 2 on the weekends from all the 1st ave bars?

for late night pizza, i actually like duffy's in dinkytown. duffy's doesn't get much play on the chowhound boards but it's good fresh independent pizza. higher quality ingredients than luce imo. open til 2:30 on the weekends.

I agree on the quality of the pizza Luce. It's probably the last place in town I'll go (not counting chains), unless it's 3 in the morning and I'm in the warehouse district and it's a matter of life and hangover.

But, then again, the OP wasn't asking about quality.

                        1. re: Loren3

very good point. the dt luce is great for peoplewatching on fri/sat nites, as all the nightclubs on 1st avenue close at 2 and everyone heads to the luch for their late-night slice. so you get ALL types there, that's for sure.

              2. 2 ideas for late night dining are Azia and the 112 Eatery. Azia serves until 2 AM and 112 until 1 AM. Yummy.
