New Haven Fish Market

Anyone know a good fish market in New Haven (or, if not, one of the surrounding towns)?

    1. In my opinion, the best fish market in the New Haven area has to be Number 1 in Hamden. Truly amazing seafood......head and shoulders over any other place we have tried. Not cheap, but in this case, you definitely get what you pay for!

      1. Personally, Number 1 doesn't melt my butter in the same way as the reply above. The fish itself is certainly the best in New Haven and nearby, but it's not "truly amazing".

What's worth the trip to #1 , IMHO, is the service and the variety. They carry a selection that is nicely seasonal and wide. They'll explain to you how to prep things if you're doing it for the first time, they'll explain unfamiliar fish to you, they'll even give you simple recipes if you ask nicely. They're not compulsive about precise weighing when they serve you, as was a fish place near our last home, but you get used to asking for the right fish in the right way. (E.g. I no longer ask for 1.5# of salmon fillets, but rather for two fillets, each 6 inches wide, though I do ask for and get 1.5# of flounder.)

Try Bud's Fish Market in Branford, tends to be pricey but the quality and selection is excellent.
