Espresso and coffee near W77th/Broadway?

Hi again! Thanks to the 'hounds on this board, my trip to Manhattan in two weeks is taking shape nicely. However, I forgot one crucial question: where is this gal going to get her coffee fix while travelling? I love a good latte with a beautiful microfoam or a cup of french press coffee, black. But yes, I wlll settle for solid coffee out of a commercial drip machine as well.

A friend sent this to me. Is it a well-researched list? And even if it is, where am I to go all the way up on 77th and Broadway first thing in the morning?!

  1. What time do you need your coffee, and do you need it before you do almost anything else? Or are you up for a walk across the park - my favorite (but I'm on the UES, not UWS - hopefully others from the UWS will chime in) is Via Quadronno - 73rd between Fifth and Madison - just half a block from Central Park. I love their cappuccino.

oye, 1.8 miles. 3 is about the height of what I'm able to jog, so I'm going to say I probably can't make it to and from after flying cross country! Is there a way for me to jog there and bus back across the park on Terrace or 79th? Otherwise I'll keep it on file for when I'm at/near the Met. I do need coffee before 12, but am happy to stop for a good capp any time. Thanks!

Another great place to go near the Met is Cafe Sabarsky - viennese coffee (Kaffee mit schlag ....) and pastries.

    2. Cafe la Fortuna - W71st bet CPW & Columbus. They have an wonderful backyard garden and have opera music playing. Try the iced cappuccino with a scoop of chocolate sorbet. Very refreshing. P.S. it was a frequent hang out for John and Yoko.

Definitely check out La Fortuna. Excellent. Forget the frou-frou scooped sorbet mentioned above and have a classic espresso/coffee/latte. . . the best in town. They provide table service if you sit, which is very civilized. However, if you are an early morning coffee drinker, you must take yours elsewhere. I've gone by at 9:00am to find it closed (does anyone know their hours?). BTW- it is closer to Columbia, north side of street.

La Fortuna is now closed. Such a loss.

      2. I like that little place in the Ansonia, north side of the building so I guess that's 74th between b'way and west end, south side of street, next to the dry cleaners. I forget the name but you cant miss it. Cute place, nice atmosphere.

        1. While it's nice to have that list (none of those would have been places I'd have recommended, though), it lists not a single cafe anywhere near you. Immediately around you on Broadway, there are a few Starbuckses, if you go for that. My personal preference is for Arte Around the Corner on 73rd and Columbus. They have a brilliant selection of coffees, teas and pastries. While their capuccino is expectedly good, even their regular roast is very rich and robust, and at $1.50 a cup, a very sensible pick-me-up.

          1. Wow, those certainly are enough recs to keep me caffeinated for 4-5 mornings. Thanks, everyone!

            1. For solid commercial drip, try Le Pain Quotidien (85th and Amsterdam) or Zabar's Cafe (80th and Broadway).
