Concur on the dicey nature of Monday sushi... If you want Japanese fare, I would definitely recommend Musha, tho certainly not *new*

New, you might try Abode or Rustic Canyon.

To start off... Sushi can be dicey on a Monday - by Monday, the fish market's been closed for 2 days. Yes, the miracle of modern refrigeration can do wonders in keeping fish fresh, but why pay for merely good (and refrigerated) fish when you can go on a Tuesday-Friday night and have EXCELLENT, fresh sushi & Sashimi?

That having been said, sushi recs in Santa Monica (& environs) (& I don't know if any of these is open for Mondays):
      1. The Hump (at the SM airport)
      2. Mori Sushi (on Pico)
      3. Kiriko (on Sawtelle)
      4. Yuzando (on Sawtelle)
      5. Tengu (near the pier)

In my opinion, you should skip:
      Sushi Roku
      En Sushi
      Echigo

And not to forget two local favorites: Sushi King & Noma. Nothing fancy but solid sushi.

Haven't tried Sushi King, but Noma has really gone down hill over the years. On my last visit the toro was so tough and stringy that it was inedible.
