Black Russian Rye?

I don't have the time to travel all the way down to Brighton Beach every time I want some good black Russian rye bread. Surely I can find great Russian rye in Manhattan. Ideally, I'd like to be able to acquire it in or near the lower east side, but anywhere closer than Brighton Beach is fair game. Anywhere that supplies a serviceable loaf is good to know about, but I'd also be interested to know where to get the best.

Have you never been to Orwasher's Bakery? http://www.orwasherbakery.com/product... Nothing in or around Brighton Beach is near as good as the breads they have been making at Orwasher's since your grandmother, you, probably your great grandmother, was a girl. Go there. Buy some bread. Be happy.

I second Orwasher's. The black russian bread is my favorite and I always get it when I go.
