I won't be there long, but this will be a "food" trip. I love ethnic foods and don't really do trendy- though I may see about Balthazar. I'll probably be a party of 1.
Yay or nays on the list I've compiled? I haven't come across any Filipino- are there any choices for that?

Italian:
Bar Stuzzichini, ~~Lupa Romana(maybe),Via Emilia,Arezzo,Da Andrea,Cacio e Pepe

Ethiopian: Meskerem,Ghenet,Awash

Moroccan: Bar 6,Café Mogador

Other: Russian Samovar, Madiba- S. African,Bamiyan- Afghani

Bakeries:
Sullivan St. Bakery
Rocco's! (I love their amaretti and haven't found anything else that comes close)

For Italian, Lupa is a good choice. I like Via Emilia, Cacio e Pepe, and Da Andrea, but I'd recommend Crispo, Apizz, or Peasant instead
For Moroccan I like Zerza
I just tried Meskerem for the first time last weekend. It was good, not great. I haven't been to the others.
I can't argue w/your bakery picks.

I like Via Emilia. The homemade pastas are delicious, especially the first-rate lasagna.

Cacio e Pepe is good as well, but you might want to try their new sister restaurant, Bocca, on 19th St., b/t Park Av. S. & B'way. Delicious food (including an excellent cacio e pepe), friendly service, and a space with modern decor and a hip feel. If you prefer, there is bar dining.

Bamiyan's food is o.k., but nothing special.

If you like Turkish food, check out Turkish Kitchen or Ali Baba.

In the bakery dept., you might want to stop by the newest sensation, Madeleine Patisserie, on 23rd St., b/t 6th & 7th Avs.

Enjoy your stay in NYC and Bon Appetit!
