Inspired by this article:

from the New York Times a few months ago, I've decided to stock my new kitchen by hitting a restaurant supply store. I don't know any good ones in San Diego though, any recommendations? Obviously looking for the best price, large selection, and a store that sells to individual non-industry customers.

San Diego Restaurant Supply, downtown on Market St. around 11th or 12th. There is also another restaurant supply in the next block to the East from SDRS whose name I can not remember. You can walk between the two. Prices are fairly reasonable, and downright inexpensive when compared to Great News, William Sonoma, et al.

Thanks DiningDiva, I'll check it out. I had also read there are some places in the Kearny Mesa area, any idea about those?

There is an Asian Restaurant Supply place on Convoy across from the Starbucks/Dixieline. It has quite a bit of stuff, but I think it depends on what you are looking for. Downtown has more 'industrial' supples and the one on Convoy has a lot of 'fancier' dishware/glasses/table settings and the kitcen supplies are far more for Asian cooking, although I adapt everything to everything.

Again, it depends on what you are looking for.

I have a friend who caters for fun, and she swears by R W Smith up in Mira Mesa. I don't recall seeing any restaurant supply places in Kearny Mesa, but there are so many off-the-beaten-path businesses up there!

SD Restaurant Supply is the best place for this sort of thing...person you want to talk to is Lucy, she's responsible for the retail side of things and can really make your shopping easy. Weekdays only and open til 5pm.

        Good luck.
