Cast Iron [moved from General Chowhounding Topics]

Fellow hounders..My cast iron of 20 years has accumalted a lot of baked on grease on the outside..waht is the best oway of getting rid of it..it is now creating a dirty problem with my new flat stop stove..it softens up somewhat when it is heated up but I cant seem to get it all off...HELP!!!!

  1. A wire brush on a power drill will do the trick. Or you can put the pan in the oven and run through a self-cleaning cycle. It should get most of the gunk off, but you'll have to re-season.

    1. W seem to cover this subject at least once a week. If you have a self cleaning cycle on your oven put the pan in the oven and run it through the self cleaning cycle. It will come out almost like new. You may find some rust colored residue but just wash it off and reseason the pan.
